Hilary Duff relocating to Canada with hubby Mike Comrie??

THE DIRTY ARMY: Nik, while I was listening to the radio I was shocked to hear the news that Mike Comrie and Hilary are thinking of relocating to Canada once the baby arrives.? Duff: ?I?m not the first person in Hollywood to have a baby. Other people have found a way to deal with it and I think I will, too. If it gets too much, we pack up and move, I guess. Mike and I talk about that sometimes. I don?t know? Toronto? Maybe Edmonton!? Hilary?s doesn?t want her child to experience the chase from the paparazzi that she deals with on a daily basis in Hollywood.? I know I?m not the only one who thinks this is the most retarded decision ever (if it?s even true). I?d rather have my child grow up in a high class environment then be around a bunch of low class bottle rats. I?ve been to Deadmonton a lot, its a dirty, smelly, over all a failure of a city. Its a murder capital for crying out loud. Drugs are everywhere! I know drugs are in every city but Deadmonton has it bad. Like come on. Your thoughts on this Nik?

My daughter Press will never date their kid, so its best they move to Deadmonton. Mike is family money so they do whatever his family tells them.- nik

Facebook Files Updated PAC Form, Launches PAC Website

Facebook is getting political. Really political.

The company, which in September confirmed it was forming a political action committee, ?FB PAC,? on Wednesday filed an update to its documentation with the Federal Election Commission in order to report that it switched its corporate headquarters to Menlo Park, California from its previous location in Palo Alto.

The document, a standard statement of organization, also provides a link to the official website of the Facebook PAC, fbpac.org, which went live back in September, according to a Facebook spokesperson.

Currently, the Facebook PAC website is blocked from public view, containing only entry fields for employees to privately log in.

A Facebook spokesperson also reiterated to TPM the goals of the PAC: ?FB PAC will give our employees a way to make their voice heard in the political process by supporting candidates who share our goals of promoting the value of innovation to our economy while giving people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.?

Facebook first announced it had completed its move to the sprawling, 1-million-square-foot, former campus of Sun Microsystems on Monday, December 19. The updated PAC form declaring the new headquarters is just another piece of good housekeeping.

But the updated statement of organization also provides a glimpse of just who will be pulling the strings behind Facebook?s newly concerted effort to raise money and influence politics by backing specific candidates.

FB PAC names as its treasurer Joel Kaplan, President George W. Bush?s former deputy chief of staff, who was in May recruited away from his post-political job as an executive at Texas utility Energy Future Holdings to join Facebook as VP of U.S. public policy.

The treasurer of a PAC is responsible for authorizing all of the PAC?s expenditures, or appointing someone to authorize the expenditures, as well as depositing all of the PAC?s receipts within 10 days, among other duties, according to the FEC. The FEC also notes that the treasurer can be held personally liable for violating federal election law.

But already, Kaplan has shifted his expenditures-reporting duties to assistant treasurer Corey Owens, also named in the FB PAC filing as the ?custodian of records,? whom the FEC notes is responsible for maintaining a record of the PAC?s financial activities for the past three years running.

Owens previously served as press secretary at the Constitution Project, a bipartisan think tank dedicated to safeguarding the Constitution, and as a spokesperson for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union International, according to AllFacebook.com.

As previously noted, Facebook joins a shortlist of large tech companies to have formed PACs in order to sway Washington in their favor ? among them Microsoft, with its high-spending MSPAC ($6.8 million in expenditures in 2011), while Google?s PAC has been ramping up in advance of the 2012 election, raising $570,000 in the first six-months of 2011 but spending only $70,000 of it so far, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Facebook, by contrast, spent $910,000 on lobbying in 2011, according to the Center, and that was well before and separate from its PAC, which has yet to report any expenditures. How Facebook plans to raise and spend its PAC money remains to be seen. Stay tuned.

North Korea hails nuclear, military feats of Kim Jong-il (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? North Korea lauded the military might built up by deceased leader Kim Jong-il on Thursday, likely tying his young successor to the same policies that have set Northeast Asia on edge as the impoverished state inches closer to nuclear weapons capability.

A gathering of 100,000, soldiers in uniform and bare-headed civilians, gathered in silence in wintry sunlight in the capital Pyongyang to mourn the passing of the man who had led the country for 17 years until his death on December 17.

Kim Jong-un, a jowly man in his late 20s who will become the third of his line to lead North Korea, took centre stage overlooking the central square named after his grandfather to listen to tributes to the "great revolutionary."

"Great Leader Kim Jong-il ... laid the foundation for our people to live on as autonomous people of a world-class military power and a proud nuclear state," parliament chief Kim Yong-nam said in the eulogy.

The North has conducted two nuclear tests.

Larry Niksch, who has tracked North Korea for the non-partisan U.S. Congressional Research Service for 43 years, believes it could take as little as one to two years to have a working nuclear missile once it produced enough highly-enriched uranium for the warhead's core fuel.

That could threaten regional security and give the North a powerful bargaining tool in extracting aid for its economy.

North Korea's state television footage showed the young Kim flanked to his right by the country's top military general Ri Yong-ho on the balcony of the Granc People's Study House. Also nearby him were Defense Minister Kim Yong-chun, and his uncle and the key power-broker in the transition, Jang Song-thaek.

Jang, 65, is believed to be the regent heading a select group of caretakers, as the brother-in-law of Kim Jong-il who survived purges to become his closest confidant who oversaw the power succession before his death of a heart attack.

He stood behind the younger Kim in Wednesday's mass funeral parade, escorting the hearse carrying the coffin.

Solemn and grimacing, the younger Kim, believed to be born in early 1984, stood motionless throughout the ceremony. He only came to the forefront of the North's dynastic succession last year by taking on key military and ruling party posts.

"Comrade Kim Jong-un is the highest leader of the party and people who takes on Great Leader Kim Jong-il's philosophy and leadership, personality and morals, courage and audacity," Kim Yong-nam said.

CRUEL AND CUNNING ENOUGH TO SUCCEED?

Mourners, their heads bowed as the ceremony concluded, spilled over to both sides of the Taedong River as temperatures stood at about minus 10 Celsius (14 Fahrenheit). Boats moored on the river and trains in their yards blew their whistles for three minutes to mourn Kim Jong-il's passing.

The eulogies were short on boasts about economic achievements from a strongman who used his Songun, or "military first," policy to divert resources to build a conventional and weapons of mass destruction program.

The North's economic output is now smaller than in the 1990s under the rule of his father Kim Il-sung, who founded the state in 1948, and it has been squeezed harder under international sanctions for its missile and nuclear tests.

Gyorgy Toloraya, a Russian expert who is Director of Korean Programs at the Institute of Economy at the Russian Academy of Sciences, who met Kim Jong-il for the first time in 2000 described him as "fast and witty and having "a remarkable memory" on any subject.

"...one exclusion might be modern economics, in which he, it seemed, was not so very interested, regarding it just as a tool for rich Westerners to extract profits from their fellow compatriots and poor countries," Tolaraya wrote on 38North, a website published by the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

Most Korea-watchers do not expect the North to stage a repeat of the attacks it undertook in 2010 when it killed South Korean civilians with an artillery barrage and, according to most observers, sank a South Korean naval vessel. It denied sinking the vessel and says it was provoked into the barrage.

It may take Kim Jong-un some months to assume the full panoply of official titles held by his father.

"The real question is whether the new Kim has the cruelty and cunning, qualities that his father and grandfather Kim Il-sung possessed in plenty, to preserve in the long run the essential engine of the destitute dynasty he inherits," wrote Sung-Yoon Lee of Tufts University, a leading North Korea watcher.

Iranian exiles in Iraq agree to move camps (AP)

BAGHDAD ? The head of an Iranian exile group holed up at a camp in Iraq said Wednesday that the first of the camp's residents are ready to move to a new location picked by the Iraqi government, solving a potential crisis.

The announcement Wednesday by Maryam Rajavi, the Paris-based leader of the group, averted what could have been a bloody showdown with Iraqi authorities if the residents had refused to move.

"After receiving assurances ... and as a sign of goodwill, 400 Ashraf residents are ready to go to Camp Liberty with their moveable property and vehicles at first opportunity," read the statement. Camp Liberty is the former American military base in Baghdad that has been chosen as the group's new home.

The agreement comes as militants this week twice tried to target the camp with rockets. No one was injured.

The Iraqi government vowed to close Camp Ashraf, home to about 3,400 Iranian exiles, by the end of this year. The exiles, members of the People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran, one-time allies of Saddam Hussein in a common fight against Iran, favor the overthrow of the Iranian government.

But since the ouster of Saddam they have become an irritant to an Iraqi government that is trying to establish good ties with Iran and sees the group as an affront to Iraqi sovereignty. At least 34 people were killed in April during an Iraqi government raid on the camp.

The United Nations on Sunday announced an agreement to move the residents of Camp Ashraf to a temporary location, but until Wednesday, the exiles had not said whether they would go.

Rajavi said 400 residents are ready to move first as a sign of goodwill. The statement made no mention of when the other residents would go, but the group's residents are believed to want to stay together. If the first move is successful and safe, it's likely the rest would be relocated soon.

"The transfer of the first group of residents is a test of the Iraqi Government's attitude in respecting obligations as professed to the U.N. and U.S.," Rajavi said.

At Camp Liberty, the U.N.'s refugee agency will interview the residents to determine their eligibility for refugee status, before they can eventually be resettled in third countries. Returning to Iran is ruled out because of their opposition to the regime.

Rajavi's statement also gave rare insight into a camp that was built during the 1980s and has largely been closed off to the outside world. The group's residents have not left the camp for years, and the little contact they have with outsiders is through the Iraqi military, visiting diplomats and aid agencies. They do have extensive communications equipment that allows them to communicate with the outside world.

The group's leader said residents had taken a piece of land in the desert and transformed it into a "modern city with their labor and extensive cost."

"It has a university, library, museum, hospital, power station, cemetery, mosque, parks, lake, sports and recreation facilities, and underground bomb shelters," she said.

The group carried out a series of bombings and assassinations against Iran's clerical regime in the 1980s and fought alongside Saddam's forces in the Iran-Iraq war. The group says it renounced violence in 2001. U.S. soldiers disarmed them during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Under the agreement outlined by the U.N., the international organization will monitor the relocation process, and then a team from the U.N.'s refugee agency will be deployed at the new location to process the refugee claims. The U.S. has said that its embassy personnel will also frequently check on the camp's residents.

Why the Pro Bowl is the Golden Globes of Sports

Tech tipsComputer Tricks

The Golden Globes nominations for Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp last year for The Tourist were pretty much the Hollywood Foreign Press Association?s way of saying it, ?F*ck it. We?re not faking it anymore. We just want stars to show up.? This year, the names changed but the trend remained the same. I mean c?mon, Glee and New Girl get nods but no love for shows like Parks and Recreation, Community, or Louie? The Globes? process consistently reeks of a popularity contest and some NFL fans might agree that some of the more recent Pro Bowl picks in high profile categories have the same stomach-turning stench.

Take for example this year?s QB picks. The top quarterbacks in the NFC and AFC were predictable: Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. Okay, I get that. Then there are the more questionable selections, like San Diego?s Phillip Rivers and New York?s Eli Manning. Phillip Rivers may have put up big yardage but his total TDS nearly equaled his total INTs. That?s a piss poor season, not a Pro Bowl season by my estimates. I mean were Rex Grossman and Blaine Gabbert already booked for that weekend?

Okay, so of course Rivers is not Gabbert bad but there are QBs like Andy Dalton, who actually has a shot to lead his team to the playoffs, that got snubbed. Dalton may not have the name recognition but he certainly pulled off a lot with a little as a rookie. And what about Matt Stafford? Sure he may not have the same globally recognized facial grimace as an Eli Manning, but as a healthy starter for his team, he?s leading the Lions to their first playoff game in more than a decade after putting up some jaw dropping numbers. Hell, even Cam Newton deserved some serious consideration given what he?s been able to pull off in his rookie season. It?s not his fault his defense sucks balls.

Let?s take a looksy at the tight end position. Antonio Gates over Aaron Hernandez? Clearly, these voters never had to play against Aaron Hernandez in fantasy football. And what about Giants? wide receiver Victor Cruz? He was on my fantasy team and his awesomeness in large part carried me to the playoffs. He made Eli shine on plenty of plays. If not for his skills, at least reward the man for his awesome touchdown dance.

Beyond that, I wouldn?t say the Panthers? Steve Smith had such an impressive season that he deserves a Pro Bowl selection. In fact, Steve Smith from a few years ago would punch current Steve Smith in the face over his fumbles and crucial drops. (?Current Steve Smith? would then likely shank ?Past Steve Smith?, because current Steve Smith is still pretty scary.)

Much like a Hollywood awards show, the Pro Bowl picks seems so very subjective. But unlike with acting, there are subjective considerations AND hardcore numbers available to voters to help them make their decisions. In the same way that nominating the dude from Dexter every year has just gotten tired, so has what seems like automatic pilot voting for certain Pro Bowl categories.

Perhaps this is why, much like the Golden Globes, the Pro Bowl has lost some of its luster. I don?t know anyone who sits through either broadcast anymore, very few people seem to take either seriously, and even fewer remember who won the honors the year before. Maybe the NFL and the HFPAA can join forces for a new NBC Prime Time Special, ?The Golden Bowl?, where NFL players and actors team up in a battle on the gridiron?wearing tuxes and couture gowns. At least then everyone would be in on the joke.

If you still care who made the Pro Bowl, you can check out a complete Pro Bowl List here.

India Says Reports Of Patient Deaths Untrue

The head of Rajasthan's health ministry denied reports that more than 40 patients have died in recent days amid an ongoing strike by doctors at public hospitals in the Indian state."The number of deaths being reported doesn't hold true," according to Health Minister Aimaduddin Ahmad Khan, who acknowledged a shortage of doctors and efforts to hire additional physicians. The ministry is working with private hospitals so state hospital patients can be transferred to them, he said. Some 800 doctors have been hired to fill the gap, with another 1,000 being interviewed, Khan said Monday.CNN sister network CNN-IBN reported Sunday that the government had suspended 40 doctors, and 390 others have been arrested for failing to perform their duties. Some 10,000 doctors remained on strike. The doctors, who work at government-run hospitals that cater to the poor, are demanding higher salaries and better promotion opportunities that are on par with their counterparts in federal medical services. But so far, the state government has not budged on their demands.Instead, it made interim arrangements by bringing in 373 military doctors Saturday, said Dr. Lokendra Sharma of SMS Medical College in Jaipur. Another 1,000 doctors will be brought in Monday, he said. The government has also tapped doctors from railway services, brought others out of retirement and has asked some private hospitals to provide care at government rates.Army doctors have also stepped in to help out, and emergency services were restored in some hospitals, CNN-IBN reported Sunday. But the strike has brought about real consequences, some say."Patients, they are dying," said Dr. Ganpat Chandra Gupta, an anesthesiologist. He said the government needs to negotiate with the state's government doctors."They are working in poor conditions," he said. "The government is deaf and dumb and blind."Some questioned whether doctors ought to go on strike, risking the health of those who are sick. But doctors in other Indian states sent letters of support for their peers in Rajasthan condemning the "insensitive and callous attitude" of the state government."The profession of doctors is very noble but when their voice is not heard they are forced to go on the path of agitation," said a letter signed by the heads of thee medical associations in Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.

Mexican army: 'El Chapo' security head arrested (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? The Mexican army announced Sunday that it had captured the head of security for Sinaloa drug cartel head Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, one of the world's most wanted men.

The suspect, who was not identified by name, was captured in the Sinaloa state capital of Culiacan and will be presented to the media Monday morning, the army said.

Guzman, Mexico's top drug lord, is one of the world's richest men, and has eluded authorities by moving around and hiding since his 2001 escape from prison in a laundry truck.

The army said the man they had arrested also ran cartel activities in Durango and southern Chihuahua state, and was responsible for carrying out secret burials of cartel victims, kidnapping, extortion and arson. They did not say if the arrest moved the military closer to capturing Guzman, an arrest that would be seen as a major victory for the government of President Felipe Calderon.

Guzman is worth more than $1 billion, according to Forbes magazine, which has listed him among the "World's Most Powerful People." He has a $7 million bounty on his head, and thousands of law enforcement agents from the U.S. and other countries working on capturing him.

His cartel controls cocaine trafficking on the Mexican border with California and has moved eastward to the corridor between the Mexican state of Sonora, which borders Arizona.

Separately, Mexican soldiers discovered 13 bodies in an abandoned truck Sunday along with a message that they were killed in a war between rival drug cartels in the eastern state of Veracruz, officials said.

The bodies were found in Tamaulipas state, a few hundred yards (meters) from its border with Veracruz, according to the Tamaulipas attorney general's office. The office said that 10 of the bodies had been decapitated.

The area has been the scene of bloody battles between the Gulf and Zetas cartels, and a pair of banners alluding to a rivalry were found in the truck, the statement from the attorney-general's office said.

On Friday, the attorney general's office in Veracruz said it had found 10 bodies in a different area along the border with Tamaulipas after receiving a tip.

On Thursday, three U.S. citizens traveling to spend the holidays with their relatives in Mexico were among those killed in a spree of shooting attacks on buses. In the spree, a group of gunmen attacked three buses in Veracruz, killing a total of seven passengers.

The Americans killed were a mother and her two daughters who were returning to visit relatives in the region.

The five gunmen who allegedly carried out the attacks were later shot to death by soldiers.

Earlier, the gunmen also killed four people in the nearby town of El Higo, Veracruz.

Local police in Veracruz have become so corrupt that on Wednesday the government decided to dissolve the entire force in the state's largest city, also known as Veracruz, and sent the Navy in to patrol. Some 800 police officers and 300 administrative employees were laid off.

US appears to soften ban on online betting (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration appears to have softened a U.S. ban on Internet gambling.

In a legal opinion posted Friday, the Justice Department said online betting unrelated to sporting events falls outside the reach of federal law.

The U.S. government has long considered such gambling illegal when it crosses state lines.

The gambling industry is worth billions worldwide but many operators are based overseas. Washington has cracked down on some of them, and a 2006 law forbade financial institutions from processing funds for most online wagering.

Because of the difficulty in enforcing age and other requirements, the issue has divided lawmakers and the industry. But several states have been studying plans for web betting within states.

The opinion letter was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Breast Cancer Patients Face More Imaging Tests Today - iVillage

FRIDAY, Dec. 23 (HealthDay News) -- Women with breast cancer undergo many more imaging tests between diagnosis and surgery than they did in the early 1990s, a new study finds.

The tests -- breast ultrasounds, MRIs and mammograms -- help doctors determine the best course of treatment, but add to the hassles and expense of care, the study says.

"The burden to the patient is increasing substantially," said study leader Dr. Richard Bleicher, an associate professor of surgical oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. For older patients, especially, coordination of care is needed, he said.

Bleicher, a breast surgeon, evaluated data on more than 67,000 women in the United States diagnosed with breast cancer from 1992 to 2005. His intent was to clock the time and inconvenience involved in multiple imaging appointments.

In 1992, he found that 1 in 20, or under 5 percent of patients, had imaging twice or more during the preoperative period of about 37 days. By 2005, 1 in 5 patients, or nearly 20 percent, had two or more imaging sessions.

"Patients are having a lot more imaging done overall," he said. "I can't tell you whether the imaging was appropriate or not appropriate."

The percentage of patients who had more than one type of imaging on a given day increased more than six-fold, from about 4 percent in 1992 to just over 27 percent in 2005, the study found.

A subgroup of 20 patients had five or more mammogram visits during the pre-op period, he found.

For the study, the researchers used Medicare claims linked to the U.S. National Cancer Institute's Surveillance Epidemiology End Results data for women with breast cancer. They zeroed in on about 67,750 women over age 65 who had invasive cancer that hadn't spread and who were scheduled for surgery.

Bleicher presented the findings earlier this month at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. He urged his colleagues to consider ways of streamlining the testing, with an eye to improving treatment without raising costs.

The increase in imaging tests does not surprise Dr. Carol Lee, head of the communications committee for the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Commission.

"Practices have changed," she said. "Standards of care have changed." Since 1992, imaging technology has advanced greatly, she said, noting there are more, and better, options.

One limitation of the study, she said, is that the outcomes are not addressed. "This is not telling the whole story," she said. "What gets lost in the numbers is, what are the possible benefits of this additional imaging?"

"Yes, we are doing more tests," she said. "But we are not doing tests for the sake of doing tests."

Some states have laws that address self-referral, said Shawn Farley, spokesperson for the American College of Radiology. The specifics of the laws vary.

Lee agreed with Bleicher that doctors should strive for better coordination of imaging tests.

If your doctor orders imaging, Bleicher recommends asking why it's needed. You might also ask if the doctor expects more imaging will be needed and if so, whether it's possible to schedule tests together, he said.

The study was supported by the U.S. Public Health Service, the American Cancer Society, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and private donors.

Research presented at meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Melanie Amaro Wins The X Factor (Videos)

Congrats go out to Melanie Amaro who is officially the first winner of the new Fox hit show The X Factor. Yes Christmas came early for the beautiful brunette with the amazing voice. Last night was The X Factor finale and it was full of joy, tears and surprises. It all began with the shocking announcement that Chris Rene was voted off during the first half of the finale. In all honesty I was rooting for him especially after his performance last night, which you can check out in the below video. Once Rene was gone that left Melanie and singer Josh Krajcik to battle it out to be crowned the winner of the reality TV show. Having to choose between these two outstanding singers got tougher after they sang their version of David Bowi?s ?Heroes?. It was a killer performance that showed just how talented these two really are. Don?t just take my word for it though check out the below video from last night?s show. In the end it was the 19-year old Florida native that took home the $5 million prize and Pepsi spot. The young girl was so in awe and shock she could barely speak. [...]

Photo of jaguar, cubs reveals success story

A photo released by a conservation group Wednesday shows a female jaguar and her two cubs in Bolivia's best-conserved national forest.

The jaguars were photographed near the Isoso Station of the Santa Cruz-Puerto Suarez Gas Pipeline in Kaa Iya National Park in Bolivia. The adult jaguar, nicknamed Kaaiyana, has been seen with her cubs in the area for over a month and has lived near the park for at least six years, according to conservationists with the Wildlife Conservation Society, which releases camera-trap photos on an ongoing basis.

"Kaaiyana's tolerance of observers is a testimony to the absence of hunters in this area, and her success as a mother means there is plenty of food for her and her cubs to eat," said John Polisar, coordinator of the Wildlife Conservation Society's jaguar conservation program.

At more than 13,200 square miles (34,400 square kilometers), Kaa Iya National Park is the largest protected area in Bolivia. The park guards the biggest and best-conserved dry forest in the world. The creation of Kaa Iya in 1995 marked the first time in South America that a protected area was established through the initiative of an indigenous people, the Guarani-Isoceno.

The Wildlife Conservation Society has conducted extensive research in the area and estimates that at least 1,000 jaguars live in the Gran Chaco Jaguar Conservation Unit, a 47,000-square-mile (124,000-square-km) area spanning southern Bolivia and northern Paraguay.

The Kaa Iya Foundation, supported by the Wildlife Conservation Society and private energy companies, surveyed the jaguars in the area. Kaaiyana was first seen at the Isoso site in 2005 with male jaguars, and again in 2006 with a cub. The Kaa Iya park guards work to prevent illegal hunting and settlements along the right-of-way to the gas pipeline and ensure the protection of wildlife, including jaguar prey, in the park.

Just Kidding! Tea Party Drops Plans to Counter-Protest Against Occupy Rose Parade

Well, that was fast. TEAPAC, the Pasadena offshoot of the Tea Party movement, has dropped its plans to stage a counter-protest against Occupy Wall Street protestors, who plan to hold up signs during the Rose Parade and march through the parade route after the TV cameras are off.

TEAPAC leader Michael Alexander told the Pasadena Star-News today that he was annoyed that Occupy protestors were being allowed to politicize the event but he didn't want to further politicize the event by bringing Tea Partiers into the mix.

Even Occupy protestors themselves have been wary about messing with local tradition and using the parade as a venue for getting their message out to a rapt audience tuned into the nationally-televised parade.

Barry Bonds gets 2 years probation in steroids probe (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Home-run king Barry Bonds was sentenced on Friday to 2 years probation, with no prison time, for his conviction on a single criminal count related to an investigation over steroids use in sports.

Bonds also was sentenced to 30 days of home confinement, 250 hours of community service, and must pay a $4,000 fine.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston handed down the sentence in a San Francisco federal court, and she immediately stayed it pending appeal. U.S. prosecutors had sought a 15-month prison sentence, while Bonds asked for probation.

A Northern California jury convicted Bonds in April on one count of obstruction of justice, but deadlocked on three other counts of lying to a grand jury.

The steroids scandal has tarnished some of the biggest stars in baseball.

Bonds, a seven-time Most Valuable Player in the National League, more than any other player ever. He made the league all star team 14 times, playing for the San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Other stars tainted by the dopping scandal include sluggers like Mark McGwire and Jason Giambi and pitcher Roger Clemens.

The Bonds prosecution stemmed from his testimony to a 2003 grand jury investigating the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative, or BALCO.

Testifying to the grand jury, Bonds admitted getting flaxseed oil, vitamins, protein shakes and creams from his trainer, but he said he had no knowledge of human growth hormones or steroids. He said no one ever injected him other than medical doctors.

Police: Crude bomb kills 1 in Bangladesh (AP)

DHAKA, Bangladesh ? A series of crude bombs went off in the Bangladeshi capital Sunday during clashes with police and opposition activists, killing at least one person and injuring another two, police and news reports said.

The death was reported in Dhaka's central Motijheel commercial district, local police official Bazlul Rashid said. He said the victim seemed to have carrying the homemade bomb ? explosives filled in tin pot.

The violence erupted after baton-wielding police dispersed thousands of opposition activists trying to rally to mark the country's 40th independence anniversary.

At least five vehicles, including a police jeep, were set on fire in central Dhaka during Sunday's violence, United News of Bangladesh news agency reported.

Police intervened after some stone-throwing activists attacked vehicles and set some of them to fire, senior police official Masudur Rahman said.

Rahman said the protesters were from the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its Islamist ally Jamaat-e-Islami.

Television footage showed police chasing dozens of stone-throwing protesters.

Private television station ATN News reported that at least 15 homemade bombs exploded in parts of the city during the violence.

Sunday's opposition rally was called to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan. Until the independence in 1971 Bangladesh was the eastern wing of Pakistan.

Bangladesh has a history of political violence. In recent months opposition parties held general strikes and protests across the country accusing the government of corruption and harassment of political rivals. The government denies the charges.

'Hunger Games' Goes Viral For 100-Day Countdown

In this week's Hobnobbing, we examine Lionsgate's latest attention-grabbing campaign.
By Amy Wilkinson

One-hundred days can seem like a pittance when, say, it's the first week of September and you've pleasantly (and too quickly) whiled away three months' worth of summer vacation. But 100 days can feel like an eternity when it's all that's standing between a fan and a highly anticipated film debut. Such is the case for the big-screen adaptation of "The Hunger Games," which hits theater March 23, 2012 — exactly 100 days from today.

To sate fans' appetites and capitalize on a milestone date, Lionsgate launched a viral campaign called #HungerGames100 Poster Puzzle Hunt. The online scavenger scramble recruited 100 different websites (including MTV) to host a piece of a puzzle and tweet a relevant link. Once solved, the puzzle would reveal the newest poster for the film starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.

In keeping with the film's Twitter-heavy rollout, intrigued fans took to the social-networking site to chat about the project. @mayachelsie wrote, "This #HungerGames100 is making me too excited. Oh gosh. I think I'm gonna throw up... 100 DAYS TILL THE HUNGER GAMES!" Similarly, @KarimaHessen enthused, "#HungerGames100 This is going to be the longest 100 days of my liiiiiife!!"

Though many fans were excited by the film's impending debut and the campaign itself, the prospect of hunting down 100 individual pieces was daunting for many. @16princessful mused, "I am not gonna even try to find all 100 pieces cuz I don't even know where to start lol. #HungerGames100." @mollsabeth chimed in, "If I didn't have a job, I would absolutely be trying to solve the #HungerGames100 puzzle."

Whether you joined the hunt or waited for a more industrious (not to mention patient) fan to solve the puzzle, it's hard to deny Lionsgate caught the Internet's attention, with many high-profile sites participating (in addition to MTV, Entertainment Weekly, E! Online and People all played ball) and the campaign, at times, trending on Twitter. This isn't the first time Lionsgate has utilized the power of the interwebs. Back in October, MTV and a handful of other sites participated in a concerted rollout of the film's character posters (hello, Peeta!), and, of course, Twitter went into a tizzy for the film's first teaser and trailer debuts.

Though we can only speculate as to what viral treasures await in 2012, we want to know what you think of these types of campaigns. Quirky and cool? Or too much work? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!

Russia investing in victory at home Olympics ? RT

The Russian Olympic Committee has invested more than $12 million in 2011 alone into the national sport federations as the country hopes to win big at their first-ever Winter Games, in Sochi 2014.

?According to top officials, the ultimate goal for Russia is to finish first in terms of gold medals at the Black Sea resort.

?We?ve invested around $12 million into various sports federations so far,? Akhmed Bilalov, Russia?s Olympic Committee vice-president, said. ?This money was allocated, in the first place, to financing foreign specialists, cutting-edge technology and scientific research. And we?ll keep up our support in the future so that athletes have access to top level trainers and equipment."

"But the most important thing for us is not just to invest money but to get a result in the end,? he added.?? ?

Canada have provided a shining example and a tough act to follow after the North American nation prevailed at their home Olympics last year.

The Vancouver Games also witnessed the sharp decline of perennial powerhouse, Russia, who could manage only 11th in the overall table.

LG Optimus LTE launches in Japan, wears kimono red

It looks like Japanese networks haven't yet satisfied their lust for high-end 4G phones. LG's Optimus LTE is primed to launch on NTT Docomo's Xi network tomorrow, going toe-to-toe with Samsung's Galaxy S II LTE. LG, which launched the first LTE-certified device in Japan, is hoping that the Optimus LTE's HD IPS display will be enough to divert attention away from the Super AMOLED Plus screen of its Korean rival. A special red edition should also help it stand out from the crowd of anonymous dark oblongs, although the color palette of DoCoMo's current range is anything but staid. The carrier plans to hit around 30 million customers with its high-speed service before the end of 2015, which should keep spare battery and charger manufacturers in business for the foreseeable future.

Fresh iPhone Apps for Nov. 30: TED update, Football Connect, Sea Stars, Extraction: Project Outbreak (Appolicious)

Get plugged into the Technology, Entertainment and Design Conferences wherever you are with TED, today?s leading Fresh iPhone App. Formerly available only for the iPad, TED has made the jump to the smaller screen as a free download. It?s followed by Football Connect, a social app that plugs you into NFL football games and lets you play a social game with your friends while you watch. Sea Stars, an endless running title with a nautical theme, leads our games selection today, followed by the decidedly less cute Extraction: Project Outbreak, a zombie shooter with some very intuitive touch controls.

Straight from the Technology, Entertainment and Design Conferences comes TED, an app filled with the interesting talks by notable people that the events are known for, ranging from former President Bill Clinton to Bill Gates and beyond. The official TED app previously was only available to iPad owners, but has made its way to the iPhone and the iPod Touch with a new update, bringing along with it the conferences? full library of presentations.

TED allows you to watch videos from conferences past and present, as well as save and bookmark your favorite or most interesting talks to check out later. You can also play videos on other devices with TED?s Air Play support, or listen to a continuous stream of TED discussions using the app?s TEDradio feature.

Part play-by-play, part social game, Football Connect is a companion app you fire up during National Football League games that keeps you up on the action. It?ll provide you with updates on what?s happening in the game you?re watching (as well as others), info on players and teams, and even a look at where the ball is on the field at any given moment. But that?s only half of what the app is all about.

The other half is a social game you can play with your friends in which you all try to guess what?s about to happen in the game. When you connect to a game, you get a game board filled with players and you can choose actions for each one, like ?reception? or ?touchdown.? If that players makes that event in the game happen, you earn points ? and if you?re able to make a Bingo-style line of four adjacent pieces, you get triple points. It?s an easy and fun way to play against your friends (or enemies, or strangers) using Facebook while enjoying the game on TV.

Sea Stars (iPhone, iPad) Free

An endless running game, Sea Stars feels a lot like Halfbrick?s spectacular Jetpack Joyride, but with a much cuter presentation. That?s not a bad game to draw comparisons with, seeing as?Jetpack Joyride is pretty phenomenal. Sea Stars is equally compelling. This time, you play a dolphin trying to swim as far as possible to rack up points and grab coins. Touching the screen causes your dolphin to dive, and releasing makes him rise or even leap through the air.

While there are dangers to avoid, Sea Stars feels like it?s much more about grabbing coins and other power-ups along the way to maximize your distance. Jumping high in the air enough times brings ?rainbow birds? that inundate you with coins, and you can also recruit the help of several friendly characters that change the way your dolphin controls. Coins can buy you power-ups to help you get further, or help you to complete the game?s various additional objectives that help keep it interesting.

Zombies are loose (again), and you have to shoot them all (again), as an elite private military contractor tasked with performing high-risk extractions. But you only need one finger to play Extraction: Project Outbreak ? tapping the screen causes your character to move to a place, while dragging your finger over zombies automatically targets them. The key is to keep moving as you blast enemies to avoid being overrun.

Extraction: Project Outbreak includes a single-player campaign ranging between four and five hours long, as well as four other game modes to work through. It also includes role-playing game elements as you progress through it, allowing you to earn experience points that can be spent to improve your character to make him more powerful and more resilient.

Chinese Stock Alarm? Sino-Forest May Be the Best of the Bunch

Sino-Forest is a Wholly-Owned Foreign Enterprise that harvests, processes, and sells wood from leased or owned tree plantations in various Chinese provinces. Its international management hails from Hong Kong, China, and Canada. Sino-Forest trades on the Toronto Exchange, is audited by Ernst & Young, and its glossy annual reports boast of master agreements, huge markets, a plantation strategy, and possible a billion dollar loan from Chinese banks.

If you want to invest in China, Sino-Forest appears (or appeared) to be among your best bets.

Sino-Forest?s compelling story generated a market capitalization of six billion dollars and a share price that rose from $10 to $23 while stocks were collapsing worldwide.

That was then. A critical report sent the share price tumbling eighty percent, trading has been suspended for possible violations of security laws, and the Canadian Mounties are investigating for fraud. The company?s outside directors hired PriceWaterhouseCoopers to investigate.

The investment community finally got a clear picture of how business is done in China, did not like what it saw, and dumped the stock. It?s as simple as that.

Among the laundry list of Sino-Forest?s suspect business practices are:

1. Sino-Forest uses informal leasing agreements with government forestry agencies rather than clearly defined legal arrangements based on legislative mandates.

2. Chinese regional forestry officials asked Sino-Forest to keep leasing and sales agreements confidential. If asked by third parties, they would deny having issued them in order to avoid sanctions for exceeding their authority.

3. Sino-Forest management introduced a person to auditors as the vice-chief of the forestry bureau of Hunan province, who was no longer in that position but was a paid consultant.

4. Sino-Forest runs its business through 58 holding companies incorporated in the British Virgin Islands. They are unwilling to release their financial records.

5. Auditors have been able to examine only 28 of the 267 bank accounts the company has in mainland China.

The Sino-Forest case reveals that business is done in China through informal agreements with state or party officials, who grant access to licenses, resources, and markets only if they are paid under the table. There can be no official records of these payments. Auditors are not allowed to see bank accounts, and transactions are muddied by a proliferation of shadowy intermediaries, which are likely owned by state and party officials or their families.

Interim Raw GM John Laurinaitis? latest fashion endeavor

Executive Vice President of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis is exceedingly proud of all that he?s accomplished as the Interim General Manager of Raw SuperShow. He?s publicly fired WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross on live television, he?s re-signed former WWE Champion Kevin Nash to a new contract and he?s even accumulated more than 40,000 Twitter followers (@WWERawGM). Yet, in a recent interview with WWE.com, Mr. Laurinaitis was particularly boastful about his most recent career milestone: his first T-shirt.

?It?s kind of like the iconic ?Austin 3:16? shirt or the original nWo shirt in that it makes a statement,? Laurinaitis explained with a grin.

The basic black shirt features the words ?Future Endeavored? on the front, with ?John Laurinaitis: Executive Vice President of Talent Relations/Interim General Manager, Monday Night Raw? on the back. (Yes, the WWEShop.com staff somehow managed to fit Laurinaitis? full title on the garment without inflating their printing costs.)

1211592968001|01:23The terminology ?future endeavored? has been thrown around quite a bit since Mr. Laurinaitis began gracing our television screens each and every Monday night, but some WWE Universe members may still be unclear on the phrase?s actual meaning. While he was firing off what appeared to be a strongly worded text message, the Interim Raw GM said he was more than happy to clarify.

?As everyone knows, I give opportunities for talent to come into WWE, but I also give them the opportunity to leave and go elsewhere to better themselves,? Laurinaitis explained. ?I wish them the best in their future endeavors.?

He added, ?It?s a professional way of saying ?go elsewhere, learn what you need to learn and ? maybe ? come back to be the WWE Superstar they want to be.??

Now that his first-ever T-shirt is ?flying off the shelves? (his words), what new John Laurinaitis items can our fans look forward to? Armbands? Sweat pants? Skateboards?

?Whatever the WWE Universe wants, Mr. Laurinaitis will give it to them,? the EVP affirmed.
