With Samsung a major sponsor of this summer's London Olympics, you can expect to see the Samsung Galaxy S III everywhere. But what if instead of you seeing the Samsung Galaxy S III thanks to the Olympics, you were seeing the Olympics thanks to the Samsung Galaxy S III? Samsung is offering tickets to the 2012 games to the first 50 owners of the Samsung Galaxy S III.

Only those who have pre-ordered the device are allowed to participate. Oh, did we mention that the first 50 units will be released from Samsung's retail store in the new shopping mall at Westfield Stratford City, London? The Samsung Galaxy S III will be launched there on May 29th at 6pm. And if you're complaining that the store is in London and you don't have the wherewithal to get the ducats, you might as well stop the whining. The Olympics are in London this year so if you can't get there to go to Samsung's store, odds are you can't make it to the games either.

'Men in Black III' tops 'Avengers' at box office

The third "Men in Black" alien action comedy bumped the mighty "Avengers" from the top of movie box office charts through Sunday and was likely to dominate theaters over the rest of the U.S. Memorial Day weekend.

"MIB 3", starring Will Smith, racked up $55 million in the United States and Canada from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates. The movie also topped box offices in 104 countries around the world, and is expected to haul in a global $202 million over the four-day holiday weekend, distributor Sony Pictures said.

It is the first "Men in Black" film to reach theaters in 10 years, and the best performing film since the franchise began in 1997.

In "MIB 3", Smith returns to his role as Agent J, half of a secret-agent duo that keeps order among aliens disguised as humans and living on Earth. Tommy Lee Jones plays his partner, Agent K.

The new installment finds J traveling back to the 1960s to save a younger version of K, portrayed by Josh Brolin.

"MIB 3" knocked superhero team "The Avengers" to second place after three weeks at No. 1.

The global, billion-dollar blockbuster collected $37 million in North American theaters from Friday through Sunday. It also became the fastest film to cross the $500 million domestic threshold, getting there in 23 days and shattering the 32 day record set by the 2009 film "Avatar", which went on to become the world's highest-grossing movie of all time.

In third place, board game-inspired action movie "Battleship" brought in $10.7 million during its second weekend in theaters.

Sacha Baron Cohen's spoof "The Dictator" took the fourth spot with $9.6 million through Sunday, pushing new low-budget horror film "Chernobyl Diaries" into fifth place with $8 million.

Total figures for the U.S. Memorial Day long weekend will be released on Monday.

Sony Corp's movie studio released "Men in Black 3." "The Avengers" was distributed by Walt Disney Co's Marvel Studios. Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. studios distributed "Chernobyl Diaries." Gay Leaders Slam Pride Parade

It wasn't just me who raised an eyebrow over today's news about Seattle's gay pride parade. Elected officeholders, business leaders, and activists are growing increasingly peeved that political officials are being asked to pay $1,200 to march this year?while businesses only have to pay $700.

"It's like a tax on being a supportive candidate," says Representative Jamie Pedersen, who sponsored the House version of a marriage-equality bill passed by the Washington State Legislature this year. And it's a big tax on politicians. Since last year, the fee for Pedersen and other elected officials went up $530, while business saw only a modest $30 rate hike.

"They are basically saying, 'We don't want candidates or elected officials in the pride parade,'" Pedersen says.

Seattle Out and Proud (SOaP), which produces the parade, simply explains on its website that participants must pay higher fees this year due to "increasing cost associated with putting on such a large event." Reached by e-mail, SOaP director Adam Rosencrantz said that the group created a fourth category of parade entrants?elected officials and political organizations, which used to pay the same amount as businesses?because "we needed to be proactive in our fund raising and to increase parade fees was one of our options." What's the logic in targeting political leaders for the money? Rosencrantz refused to elaborate, saying, "I clearly answered that question." He added that "we are maintaining the current pricing structure."

But several LGBT leaders have terse words for pride organizers.

Gay-rights activist Thomas Pitchford has created a Change.org petition that accuses the parade of "bilking candidates and office holders" and questions SOaP's accounting. "Where does the money go?" the petition asks.

And as Pedersen points out, "One of the key purposes of pride has been for the community to show its political power and support. When you have someone like Senator Ed Murray or me making the calculation that it doesn't pencil out to march, there is something drastically wrong."

Meanwhile, Louise Chernin, president of the Greater Seattle Business Association, is nonplussed: "I am not even sure why they would do that. If the fee discourages participation from people who are working to support equality and rights, that is a serious problem. I am going to call them and ask what is the purpose of this is."

Finally, the marriage equality director of Equal Rights Washington, a group named one of the parade's grand marshals, expressed his concern, too. "SOaP is not a deeply political organization," Josh Friedes acknowledges. "We can do a better job educating SOaP on making it easy for elected officials who want to show their support to do so."

"There are an awful lot of elected officials who worked hard this year to secure marriage equality," Friedes adds. "They deserve thanks, and we need to be raising money to get them reelected, not taking their money."

Buehrle, Marlins stay hot, beat Giants

MIAMI (AP) - The Miami Marlins continue to win even with their closer struggling.

Mark Buehrle pitched into the eighth inning and the Miami Marlins moved within a victory of tying the team record for the most in a month with a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.

Giancarlo Stanton hit two doubles and scored twice while Logan Morrison drove in two runs for the Marlins. Miami is a major league best 18-7 in May. The Marlins went 19-10 in August 1997.

"It's outstanding, we're playing some good ball," Buehrle said. "Everything is coming together at the same time. Hopefully we can keep it going into the next month and the couple days we have left in this month."

Buehrle (5-4) allowed two runs and eight hits while throwing 69 of 100 pitches for strikes.

"He's going to give you his heart out there," Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I know this man for many years and every time he's out there I guarantee you he's going to give you everything he has. He's worth every penny he's ever made win or lose."

Buehrle was replaced by Steve Cishek after Ryan Theriot tripled to center past a diving Chris Coghlan with one out in the eighth. Cishek retired Melky Cabrera on a ground out, which scored Theriot. Buster Posey grounded out to end the inning.

Heath Bell, who was pulled in the ninth during Friday's game in favor of Cishek as Bell allowed two runs and retired just one batter, continued his struggles. Bell allowed a single to Angel Pagan to open the ninth and after recording an out, he walked the two next two batters to load the bases ending his night early again.

"As a manager the last thing you want to do is take your closer out every day," Guillen said. "That's a very hard feeling and tough situation. We give him every opportunity we can to come out of this once again and he can't get it done."

Bell signed a three-year $27-million contract in the offseason, but has struggled to deliver. He is 2-3 with an 8.47 ERA and four blown saves in 11 chances.

"I don't think anyone else is trying harder than he is," Buehrle said. "Obviously he's frustrated going out there."

Randy Choate relieved Bell and got Nate Schierholtz to fly out scoring Pagan cutting the deficit to 5-3. He struck out Gregor Blanco to end the game. It was Choate's first save since September 23, 2009 when he was with Tampa Bay.

"Two of my hits to lefties this year was to (Blanco) so I was a little pumped that I finally got him out," Choate said. "I tried treating it like any other appearance. Obviously there is way more adrenaline going because the crowd is going nuts and the bases are loaded, but I tried to take it as get the lefties out and get out of the game."

Madison Bumgarner (5-4) took the loss allowing five runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

"Just missing today," Bumgarner said.

Blanco had three of San Francisco's nine hits.

"I feel really good," Blanco said. "I've been working on hitting more balls on the gorund and it's been great. I'm more confident. This game is all about opportunities and I know I can do good things."

With one out in the third inning and the scored tied at 1, Jose Reyes and Omar Infante each reached with base hits and successfully pulled off a double steal with Hanley Ramirez batting. Ramirez followed with a single to left scoring Reyes. After Stanton walked, Morrison grounded into what appeared to be an inning-ending double play, but Emmanuel Burriss' throw bounced passed first baseman Brett Pill allowing Infante and Ramirez to score giving the Marlins a 4-1 lead.

"(Bumgarner) had that one inning," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That's what's been happening the last couple of days. We're just trying to limit the damage."

Stanton doubled to leadoff the second and scored on a single by Donovan Solano for the Marlins first run of the game. He doubled again to leadoff the sixth and scored on a Morrison double to deep center field.

"You know what you want to do (with Stanton), I just wasn't able to do it," Bumgarner said. "I just didn't make pitches to him. It's not any different than anybody else. I just missed and when I did he hit it."

The Giants tied the game at 1 with a base hit by Blanco as Burriss slide into home safely, narrowly beating Stanton's throw from right.

NOTES: Guillen said after the game he will consider removing Bell from the closer role for the second time this season. "Right now it's not working," Guillen said. "I'm going to sleep over it and see what ideas we come up with." ... Giants LF Melky Cabrera came into the game hitting .692 (9 of 13) against Buehrle, but went 0 for 3 with a strikeout. ... Several NBA assistant coaches favor Spurs over Thunder

In a must read article by Randy Hill of Fox Sports Arizona, Hall dives into the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder's Western Conference Finals match-up by getting the opinions of those who have been on the battle grounds against both teams, opposing teams assistant coaches.

In the article, Hill interviewed five different NBA assistant coaches whose teams aren't in the playoffs. The names of the coaches are anonymous, but there are some really interesting thoughts and predictions by these select individuals. I always base the opinion of someone who actually does the profession or has been involved in the profession higher than just someone who writes about it, but has never actually been there.

One of the coaches gives his reason why the Spurs are so tough to defeat, and why they've won 18-games in a row and are undefeated to start in the playoffs.

"One thing they're really good at is locking into a team for a seven-game series and figuring out what needs to be done to be successful," another Western Conference assistant said. "They're an intelligent team . . .? an experienced team. They do a good job of not beating themselves. You have to play really well to beat them."

An interesting perspective that another assistant coach feels will work in the Spurs' favor is their superb pick-and-roll abilit. This coach says the Thunder haven't faced a pick-and-roll offense yet that uses their system so efficiently.

"Pick-and-roll is a big part of their offense," the second expert said, "but they'll really go to it even more, I think, against the Thunder. Oklahoma City's bigs haven't really faced that much high-quality pick-and-roll yet in these playoffs."

Take a bow, LA Lakers and Dallas Mavericks.

"They will against Parker," the assistant continued. "The Thunder's bigs (Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins) are really good at protecting the basket, but they're not that good at cutting off angles off the high screen. They can protect the rim, to a degree, when Parker gets in the lane, but that just opens up opportunities for 3-point shots."

For an opposing coach, it's got to be both remarkable and inspiration how the Spurs are able to maintain a winning organization year after year. This coach uses the example of rookie Kawhi Leonard and shooting guard Danny Green as evidenced of how the Spurs are so successful consistently on a season-to-season basis.

"The things they may not be good at when they get there are what they'll spend a great deal of time working on. That's why (rookie small forward) Kawhi Leonard has become deadly on the corner 3 and Danny Green went from nowhere in the league to starter on a team that might win a championship."

This final coach gives his thoughts on who will win the series between the Thunder and the Spurs. He even thinks the Spurs have the best chance at beating the Miami Heat in the Finals, if both teams make it there.

"They're not playing any slouches in OKC," the first assistant said. "And there'll be some times in this series when OKC looks too talented to handle. But, in the end, I'll go with the Spurs in this series.

"They could get the (Miami) Heat in the Finals, and the Heat is capable of beating them. But based on all the things I mentioned earlier, I'll go with San Antonio there, too."

Members of the Chatham Business Association (CBA) received a wealth of information on Thursday afternoon from Esther H. Vassar, U.S. Small Business Administration National Ombudsman and Assistant Administrator of Regulatory Enforcement Fairness.

The Office of the National Ombudsman assists small businesses when they experience excessive or unfair federal regulatory enforcement actions, such as repetitive audits or excessive fines and other unfair actions by a federal agency. Established in 1996 with the passage of the Small Business Regulatory Enforcement Fairness Act, the National Ombudsman?s office collaborates with 10 regional fairness boards, served by 50 small business owners from across the country.

Vassar was appointed National Ombudsman in August 2009. In her former roles as director of a state regulatory agency and Virginia?s Department of Minority Business Enterprise and her prominent roles working with businesses and community organizations, Vassar brings first hand experiences that enhance the communication and relationships between small businesses and federal regulatory agencies.

Vassar was in Chicago as part of her on-going journey around the country speaking with community stakeholders and entrepreneurs.

The roundtable discussion was held at the QBG Foundation building located at 806 E. 78^th Street.

?An ombudsman serves as kind of a liaison between two points,? Vassar said during the meeting.? ?It also offers a service too, in this case small businesses and it has an element of community service.?? I managed throughout my life to work in community service throughout every job I occupied.?

The national ombudsman is familiar with the challenges small business owners face; she owned two small businesses over the course of a decade.

Vassar encouraged business owners to write down their concerns on a comment form so that she can find solutions to their questions and issues. The comment form is also located online at www.sba.gov/ombudsman.

Vassar is passionate about her job and wants small business owners to know that she is working on their behalf. ?In order to be accessible to the many entrepreneurs she meets, Vassar takes one of her assistants with her as she travels the country; not only to take notes but she also wants them to meet the business owners face to face.

?I look at my staff and say you all are the people who really handle the problems as they come in,? Vassar said.? ?In order to develop sensitivity to these problems I?m going to take one person from the staff with me everywhere I go.?

Vassar said her first year on the job she traveled alone but quickly found out she wasn?t able to engage with entrepreneurs and take notes at the same time.

?It?s very difficult to talk and take notes,? she said. ??It?s almost impossible. So I said no matter what, I?m going to make the budget work. So one person accompanies me everywhere I go. Not only for them to take notes but for them to see you. And they go back with a different sense of their job.?

Melinda Kelly, executive director of the CBA moderated the forum and thanked Vassar sharing the useful and vital advice with the CBA Membership.

William Garth, CEO of the Chicago Citizen Newspaper Group and chairman of the CBA also thanked Vassar for meeting with local business owners.

Carpenter ants are very invasive pests. They really like to inhabit wooden areas that have been affected by moisture. If you have dead or decaying wood somewhere around your home, then they will eventually make their way to it. The damage they can cause is comparable to what termites are capable of doing.

Instead of eating the wood though, they will simply tunnel through it in an effort to build galleries. After constructing these galleries, they will setup nests and exit at night in search of food. You will definitely want to prevent the destruction they can cause with these few tips which follow.

You do not want to give these small creatures easy access to your home via the foundation. Therefore, it is best for you to inspect it regularly for even the smallest of cracks. If you find anything, then get your hands on some caulk and fix the problem as soon as possible.

After you have finished inspecting your foundation, take a look at the trees in your yard. Are any of the branches overhanging your roof? If so, ants can simply walk across and find some entry point to use. With that in mind, you will want to trim back branches whenever they pose a potential problem.

Speaking of trees, it is also important to get rid of dead or rotting wood in your yard such as tree stumps or old logs. As mentioned, carpenter ants love this type of wood. If they are so close to your home, there is not much stopping them from finding a way in to look for food.

Although attracted to dead and rotting wood, carpenter ants will settle for settling in your firewood. Keep it as far away from your home as is convenient for you.

Besides wood, the one other thing carpenter ants need to survive in your home is a water source of some sort. This can easily be provided if you have leaky faucets or if your roof is leaking. No matter what type of leak it is, you will need to get it repaired quickly. Leaky areas will cause damage of their own, even if ants do not come around for the water.

The THAICOM 6 satellite finance deal between THAICOM and Kasikorn Bank won the ?Asia Pacific Communications Deal of the Year 2011? from Euromoney?s ProjectFinance magazine. This is the first time that a Thai satellite project was financed through a local commercial bank and that it was structured similarly to that of foreign Export Credit Agencies (ECA).

Summer School ? ESY and Targeted Services | mofas.org

It?s that time of year, the planning for summer with our kids. Out of my 6 children, 2 will be attending school this summer break.
One is in ESY-Extended School Year, the other in Targeted Services.

What is ESY?
It is part of special education and related services. It is provided beyond the normal school year, in accordance with your child?s IEP (Individualized Educational Program) and is provided at no cost to the parents of the child.

It is often associated with school age children K-12, however ESY may also mean Special Ed services designed to maintain a young 3-5 year old child?s acquired skills and to reduce regression during periods of time when ECSE (Early Childhood Special Education) is not in session such as summer breaks. Those who qualify include any eligible student with a disability, ages 3-21 who needs ESY in order to receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE).

What is Targeted services ?
Summer school or ?targeted services? as our school district calls it are optional and voluntary programs that provide reinforcement activities that help with remedial subjects such as math, reading, etc. It also reinforces what they have learned during the school year. The focus is usually on the areas your child is weakest or needs additional help during the school year and based on testing. It also follows along the determined goals in your child?s IEP.

When is the decision made as to whether or not there is a need for ESY?
The IEP team determines each year whether or not the student needs the services, usually about 4-6 weeks prior to the end of the school year. Ideally, it should be offered or decided early enough before the end of the school year for the parents to agree or disagree with the decision made. If you disagree, there is a process in which they school must comply and also a timeline of when they must respond.

Not every child of mine on an IEP is going to go to ESY or Targeted services school, just the 2 showing need. However, know that you are the child?s best advocate and therefore should be ready with questions if the situation arises as to why your child is or is not going to receive these services.

With the school team?s decision, there is paperwork sent home. The paper is a prior written notice of the district?s proposals and refusals, regarding ESY which also includes provisions for dispute resolution, including due process, mediation and complaint investigations.

What factors determine the need for ESY?
Basically, it?s your child?s ability to acquire and maintain a skill. If regression happens after returning from breaks such as Christmas break, Spring Break, and summer breaks it may show a need. Also, the time it takes your child to recoup what they have lost, i.e. does it take days, weeks, or longer to relearn what they have not been able to retain? If the team sees significant regression or the serious potential for such regression/recoupment, your child is probably a good candidate for this program.

Another thing the IEP team looks at is whether there are behaviors that interfere or impede the learning process. The team may also look at the degree of impairment, degree of regression, the rate of recoupment as I mentioned above, the ability of the parent to provide educational structure at home, the rate of progress, behavior and physical needs, availability of alternative resources, ability of child to interact with nondisabled children, and area?s in the child?s curriculum which need continuous attention.

No one factor is important in and of itself, there are too many variables to be considered, but usually there are a combination of factors that lead to the decision for the need for ESY services. The teachers have said to me, ?There needs to be a documented need.? That usually means with observation, scores, and assessment, they can determine the criteria that will show regressing after breaks.

What exactly does regression mean?
The lack of maintaining a skill, or loss of skills, that occurs during breaks. They want to prevent a student from relapsing or going backward academically and/or behaviorally.

What does recoupment mean?
The time necessary to get back a skill that your child lost.

If goals are not met during the school year, does that constitute ESY?
Not reaching IEP goals does not automatically make a student eligible for ESY.

How long will they have summer school?
My child going to ESY will have 4 days/week for 4/weeks. She will get 1 hour/day on 2 days, and 2 hours/day on the other 2. She is a Kinder child going into 1st grade. She will be bused directly from our home.

How long is the Targeted Services?
The child going to targeted services will be going 4 days/week for 5 weeks. His classes are 3 hours/day. He is going into 6th grade. He will need to go to a central busing location in our neighborhood where they pick up a large group of kids at once.

What is a Targeted Services Program?
Summer Targeted Services is a 5 week program. Research has shown that students who participate in small group instruction through the summer maintain academic gains established during the school year.

My kid really needs this extra time to develop his skills.

Targeted Services are programs providing academic services complementing current school programming to students. These services help them develop academically and socially to keep pace with the educational achievements of their classmates.
Instructional techniques used are similar to the usual classroom method with an emphasis on literacy and math. They will also be exposed to enrichment activities that use music and art.

The goal is to increase critical skills in area?s of: reading, strategies, comprehension, math, science and other academic areas.
They also work on Social/Emotional areas which include being able to manage emotions, social skills improvement and being responsible to make good decisions.

Can any child be signed up for this service?
No, the student must be invited to participate and must meet the criteria established by the state.

Is there a fee?
The program is free of charge. It is, however, contingent on state funding. Classes could get cancelled if the state does not fund the program. So far, this hasn?t been a problem for my children for the past 5 years.

Where are classes held?
Classes are held on our school district campuses. My son who is heading to middle school will actually be going to his the middle school where he will be attending in the Fall. The Kinder child of mine is going to an Elementary school in our district, not her home elementary.

Does someone suggest your child for Targeted services?
Students are recommended by their current school to participate because they have performed academically below grade level expectations or have social/emotional factors that may put them at risk of not progressing through school. Targeted Services can take place before or after school, weekends or extended year (summer).

In our case, it has always been during the summer.

I hope this helps explain to some of you what Summer school is all about and some of the differences offered. Good luck and don?t hesistate to ask your child?s IEP Case Manager at school about what their thoughts are on your child?s need for Summer school.
