MBNation's 3rd East vs. West Showcase basketball games set for ...

SACO, Maine ? State championship team members Garet Beal of Jonesport-Beals High School, Krystal Kingsbury of Presque Isle, Allie Clement of McAuley of Portland and McKenzie Worcester of Washburn are among the more than 175 basketball players who have confirmed they plan to participate in the third annual MBNation East vs. West Showcase on Sunday.

The daylong event at the Saco Recreation Center is conducted by MBNation Basketball and showcases the talents of the state?s top players.

?This has, literally, become a preseason all-star game,? said MBNation club director Mike Woodbury of the contests.

More than 200 players were invited to participate and the final tally of who attends will be close to 180, according to Woodbury.

?It gets bigger every year,? he said.

He also expects to have between 30 and 50 men?s and women?s coaches, plus a couple of organizations that evaluate the players? potential and rank them for recruiting purposes.

Some may have already committed to a school. Beal, for instance, verbally committed to the University of Maine on Tuesday. Most have not committed yet, such as Chris Braley, a Newport native now attending Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H., who is also considered to be an NCAA Division I basketball prospect.

The day consists of seven games scheduled to be put on starting at 9 a.m., five boys games and two girls games, primarily for high school-age players.

The boys are split into four games based on high school graduation class (2013-16) plus a futures game for boys who are expected to graduate in either 2017 or 2018. Girls games may be split among two age groups, one game for the 2013 and 2014 graduating classes and the other for the 2015 and 2016 classes.

There is no breakdown into classes based on the size of the schools the players attend.

?We just tried to find the best players regardless of class,? Woodbury said. Players are coming from as far north as Caribou and as far south as York.

Some who have accepted their invitations may not be able to play, however, because of injury or other commitments.

?We don?t allow them to participate if they?re still in season for their high school sport [such as football],? said Woodbury.

The admission fee is $5 per person, but that covers all the games. The players? registration fee is $55.

Woodbury is excited because this year?s gathering is in the newly renovated Saco Recreation Center after two years at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland.

?They?ve put in a new gymnasium floor and it has more seating. And they?re bringing in extra seating,? Woodbury said of the Saco center, which will have a capacity of about 600. The center also has a concessions stand with hot food, an activity room for the players and a hospitality room for the college coaches.

The extra seating probably will be necessary, according to Woodbury.

?I expect that it will be standing-room-only for the games in the middle of the day,? he said. Those are boys games with this year?s juniors playing at 12:45 p.m. and the seniors at 2 p.m.

The futures game is first at 9 a.m. followed by the freshman boys (10:15 a.m.) and sophomore boys (11:30 a.m.).

The freshman and sophomore girls play at 3:15 p.m. followed by the junior and senior girls at 4:30 p.m. The girls games may be combined into one, however, based on the confirmation rate, Woodbury said. Fourteen girls from Western Maine and 17 from Eastern Maine have confirmed, and Woodbury prefers to have 12-player teams.

Other boys taking part include Sam Grindle of Deer Isle-Stonington, a standout guard who also won the state Class C boys individual golf title last month; Tyler Norris of EM Class A champion Hampden Academy; Thiwat Thiwat and Labson Abwoch of state Class A champ Deering of Portland; Brendan Newcomb of Brewer; Ben Walls of Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor; Nick Guiod and Kyle Bouchard of Houlton; Ben Hughes of Bangor; Mitch Worcester of Washburn; and Isaiah Stone-Patterson of Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston.

Among the other girls who have accepted invitations are Sydney and Sarah Hancock of Lake Region of Naples, Kelsie and Kylie Richards of Nokomis of Newport, Kennadi Grover of Oceanside, Jillian Woodward of Orono and Lexi Nelligan of Belfast.

The list of committed players can be found at the MBNation website at: thenationbasketball.yuku.com/topic/2468/3rd-Annual-MBNation-East-v-West-Showcase-Info?Invite-List.

Woodbury is expecting that the games will be competitive.

?This is a chance for people who might not have the opportunity to [play against] each other during the rest of the year,? hesaid. ?Hopefully, they?ll all have a good time.?

World stocks sink on US fiscal cliff fears

HONG KONG (AP) ? World stock markets struggled Friday despite encouraging Chinese economic figures as fears persisted over the so-called U.S. "fiscal cliff" that's seen as a big threat to the economic recovery.

In early European trading, the FTSE 100 index of leading British companies was nearly flat at 5,779.20 while Germany's DAX was marginally lower at 7,200.92. The CAC-40 in France was down 0.2 percent at 3,402.13.

U.S. stocks were poised to creep higher. Dow futures were up 0.1 percent to 12,786.00 and broader S&P 500 futures were up 0.2 percent to 1,377.50.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.9 percent to close at 8,757.60 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.9 percent to end at 21,384.38. South Korea's Kospi retreated 0.5 percent to 1,904.41.

Australia's S&P ASX 200 dropped 0.5 percent to 4,462.00 after the central bank released a downbeat assessment of the country's economy.

Chinese stocks dipped even as a clutch of reports provided signs of a possible recovery in the world's second-largest economy.

The Shanghai Composite Index closed down 0.1 percent to 2,069.07 and the Shenzhen Composite Index edged 0.4 percent lower to 828.46. The benchmarks seesawed between gains and losses throughout the day as investors mulled the data showing factory output rose, investment growth strengthened and inflation eased in October.

Markets have slumped worldwide as investors have refocused on challenges to the world economy following President Barack Obama's re-election. Many worry that gridlock in Washington will prevent the president and Congress from reaching a deal before $800 billion of tax increases and government spending cuts kicks in on Jan. 1.

Investors also have renewed fears about Europe's lingering debt crisis. European Central Bank President Mario Draghi warned that the economy of the 17 nation grouping that uses the euro remains weak and will struggle to grow even with "visibly improved" confidence among the currency union's financial markets.

Asian stocks are "going to be very much driven by the U.S. and Europe," said Peter Esho, chief market analyst at City Index Asia Pacific in Sydney. But "I think things will change in the first quarter of 2013 with a coordinated Chinese response" to the country's painful slowdown, he said.

Australian stocks fell after the country's central bank said in a quarterly report it was trimming growth forecasts as mining companies scale back investment plans because of declining iron ore and coal prices and the strong currency.

In currencies, the euro weakened to $1.2743 from to $1.2750 late Thursday. The dollar was unchanged at 79.38 Japanese yen.

Crude oil for December delivery was down 17 cents to $84.91 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 65 cents to close at $85.09 on Thursday.

This is your opportunity to show your home at its best and we all know that first impressions sell!

The most critical room to stage is the first room buyers will see?most often that is the living room.? This is the room where buyers will envision themselves entertaining friends and family?particularly on special occasions and holidays.? It should show off the calibre of the home and welcome buyers in.

Next, they will likely move onto the dining room where, again, they will be thinking of serving meals and entertaining loved ones.? If this room doesn?t ?WOW? them, you may have lost the buyer?unless, of course, you capture their attention by staging the kitchen and family rooms.? These rooms can make or break the deal?no question.

Crossing your fingers that buyers are intrigued enough to continue their visit, the next most important room is the master bedroom.? Buyers are looking for a place to unwind and relax at the end of a long day, so creating that feeling could be the one thing that keeps your listing on their list of favourites and brings a serious offer to the table.

If you are committed enough to stage the ensuite with a fresh, spa-like feeling, you may just have hit a home run.

Staging a property prior to listing tells buyers that you are serious and have done everything you can to present your home in ?live-in? condition?not just ?move-in? condition.? They will be able to live in this new home for 5-8 years without spending any money.? This philosophy is proving to be a winning formula over and over.

Disney buys 'Star Wars': Were we wrong about George Lucas all along?

The news that 'Star Wars: Episode 7' is on its way and that Disney has bought the 'Star Wars' franchise from George Lucas raises the prospect that the world is only now beginning to understand his vision for the classic trilogy. Disney buying 'Star Wars' could cause a 'Lord of the Rings'-like universe expansion.

For the Gen Xer, this is an existential question. Wookies and tauntauns and Luke's lightsabers are strands in our social DNA. Boring parties spontaneously become enjoyable when we can find someone to join us in mocking Episode I (or II or III, for that matter).

We know "Star Wars" begins with the scroll and pumping brass of "A New Hope" and ends with those annoying Ewoks cheering the blasted filaments of the Death Star in the skies above Endor. Full stop. Other "Episodes," novels, comics, TV series, video games, etc. ? at times enjoyable, at times tragic ? are really only cultural womp rats ? targets for the implacable purity of our derision. We, the real curators of the "Star Wars" legacy, know they are all just fuel for George Lucas's ever-expanding wallet.

But now, with Lucas selling his entire franchise to Disney with the open endorsement that the Big Mouse could make "Star Wars" movies for "another 100 years," that entire worldview is up for revision.

Yes, Lucas might be doing this solely for money. If so, he has become the Jabba the Hutt of his own universe.

Yet we must also consider another possibility. That maybe, Episodes IV, V, and VI were never meant to be a part of a sacred orthodoxy. That maybe Lucas is more J.R.R. Tolkien than Stanley Kubrick ? that his vision for "Star Wars" is now and has always been an expansive one. Perhaps it is truly an entire universe in which Luke and Han and Leia occupy only a small but important part.

Are Frodo and Samwise and Aragorn diminished by "The Silmarillion," the Tolkien epic set thousands of years before the events of "The Lord of the Rings"? Or does that book merely give us the full scope of Tolkien's remarkable vision?

The difference, of course, is that Tolkien jealously guarded his own universe. He was the sole creator, and he did not trust it in the hands of others. Lucas, meanwhile, has farmed out the expansion of his universe to others, providing the core inspiration and structure, but allowing other writers to pen his "appendices."

This process can, of course, lead to a dilution of the purity and focus of the original vision. Then again, Episodes I, II, and III suggest that, perhaps, the sanctity of the "Star Wars" legacy might be safest in others' hands.

Indeed, imagine what a true "Star Wars" fan, weaned on the original films and now a filmmaker in his or her own right, might do with Episode VII, which is reportedly slated for release in 2015? A generation of Joss Whedons are salivating.

The inspiration for "Star Wars" came from serials like "Flash Gordon." Lucas, it seems, saw his own creation unfolding in a similar way ? organically and without a defined endpoint or circumference.

In the right hands, that could be an exciting prospect.
