Philosophy department expanding, major coming | The Quinnipiac ...

Quinnipiac is adding a new Philosophy Program to its undergraduate curriculum starting in the fall.

The department has worked to create and develop the few more courses needed to establish a full-fledged philosophy program. The department was also given permission to hire two new full-time philosophy professors, who will begin working in August.

The Faculty Senate proposed this idea to its Academic Policies Committee last fall, and the Senate approved of the inclusion of the major at its first meeting in January,?according to Sean Duffy, chair of the philosophy and political science department. The State of Connecticut?s Department of Education still needs to certify the major, which is leaning toward approval soon, Duffy said.

Many Arts & Sciences faculty members, like Duffy, have waited long enough for this change.

?[It?s] about time that Quinnipiac added this major,? Duffy said. ?It was really quite embarrassing that we didn?t have it.?

Students have left Quinnipiac because they could not major in philosophy, while other students elected to design their own personalized, independent major in philosophy, according to Duffy. Five students have chosen to do this in the past three years and there are three independent philosophy majors on campus right now.

About 300 students take philosophy 101 every semester, and other courses such as ?Ethics and Human Values,? ?Logical Reasoning,? and ?Philosophy of Sex and Love? have always attracted a great deal of students, Duffy said.

The philosophy club SOPHIA?s active voice on campus also gave the philosophy department the idea to expand.

?It just makes sense to offer a philosophy degree,? Duffy said. ?Philosophy is one of the ? if not the oldest ? academic pursuits in the Western tradition of which Quinnipiac is a part. It?s all about developing the mind, the ability to think critically, reflectively and logically.?

The department will be offering about 25 to 30 200-level philosophy courses. This will include a senior seminar, mandatory core courses and several electives ranging from historical courses to topical courses. The program will also offer several more specialized courses on applied ethics, particular philosophers and specific philosophical questions.

Quinnipiac has had a philosophy minor for many years, which has facilitated the structuring of the philosophy program, as many of the courses needed for a major are already in place.

Duffy noted in particular that with a medical school being added to the university in a few years, there will be numerous opportunities to create interdisciplinary courses in medical and biomedical ethics, such as the philosophy of science. These courses, according to Duffy, could enhance the education of those interested in pursuing a career in medicine and other health professions.

The department has developed about six new upper-level courses, and have converted some courses offered on an ad-hoc basis in the past few years to become permanent options in the course catalog, Duffy said.

?There will always be a rich selection of courses to choose from,? Duffy said. ?Whether a student is interested in majoring in philosophy or is simply interested in supplementing their major course of study with interesting and mind-building courses in philosophy.?

All new courses have been submitted to the Registrar, and descriptions will soon be available for viewing online and in the printed Course Catalog.

?We aren?t limiting our goals to working only with Philosophy majors and minors,? Duffy said. ?We?re very much interested in being a central and integral part of the culture at Quinnipiac.?

Meryl Streep's Surprise Win: Experts Weigh In

'You can never call a Meryl Streep win a real upset, because she's so beloved in the industry,' BoxOffice.com's Phil Contrino tells MTV News.

Heading into Sunday night's Academy Awards, few expected any major surprises in the top categories. "The Artist" was expected to take Best Director, Actor and Picture, while Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer had been considered locks in the supporting categories for weeks.

In the Best Actress category, however, some Oscar analysts (MTV News included) may have been too quick to call the Best Actress category for Viola Davis in "The Help." Such confidence resulted in the biggest surprise of the evening when Meryl Streep won her third Academy Award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."

So what happened to Davis? In the night that belonged so heavily to the odds-on favorite, how was it that Streep pulled off the upset?

Even Streep had to admit that most people thought the award belonged to Davis. "When they called my name," she said during her acceptance speech, "I had this feeling I could hear half of America going, 'Oh no! Oh come on, why her? Again?' But ... whatever."

Jo Piazza, the author of "Celebrity Inc.," said that the crowd's familiarity with Streep may have been her key to Oscar gold. "It wasn't Meryl's performance that gave her the edge," Piazza said. "It was the fact that she hasn't won in 30 years. Her performance was great, but that was what gave her the advantage."

The perceived disappointment was a direct result of both Davis' status as a favorite and the success of "The Help." When it came to ensemble awards, even "The Artist" couldn't come close to topping the wins for "The Help" this awards season. The cast won at the SAGs, the National Board of Review and the Broadcast Film Critics Association. It also certainly helped to have Octavia Spencer cleaning up the Supporting Actress awards wherever she went.

Because of the awards and nominations close to Davis and her strong performance in the film, many saw her as the favorite for Best Actress, despite splitting many of the key awards with Streep. Davis won over the Broadcast Film Critics Association and took home Best Actress at the SAG Awards, the last major awards show before the Oscars.

But all of that overlooks the hefty haul of awards Streep took home before last night's Academy Awards. Naturally, Streep won Best Actress at the BAFTAs, a victory undermined by the very British subject matter of "The Iron Lady, but also, more importantly, at the Golden Globes, where Streep's future Oscar seemed the most likely. Though it may have initially been thought of as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's signature celebrity-love, Streep's Globes win should have been considered more heavily when predicting the Oscars.

Streep, after all, embodied many of the key traits of an Oscar winner. She played a historical figure, donned makeup to transform into her character and is a repeat winner, so perhaps there shouldn't have been as many "Oh, no's" as there were. Phil Contrino of BoxOffice.com told MTV News that Streep's status as a Hollywood legend should have precluded any talk of upsets. "You can never call a Meryl Streep win a real upset, because she's so beloved in the industry," he said. "It's important to remember that she was running very close to Viola Davis for most of the season."

We just took an opportunity to play around with the potential game-changer, and our initial impressions were quite positive. And the device, with its elegant soft-touch back, was incredibly comfortable to hold -- in fact, it felt much similar to the Honor in many respects, with the exception of its width. The unit we played with was running on stock ICS, but it's quite possible this won't be the final software version when the thing is fully baked. We hope to get add more impressions throughout the week as we go to Huawei's booth and spend some more quality time. For now, however, check out a few images below.

Paula Deen Won't Change On-Air Cooking Style Much After Diabetes Reveal (omg!)

Paula Deen, the butter queen, will continue to spread her Southern style on television... but perhaps not as thick.

After revealing that she has Type 2 diabetes in January, Deen is ready to move on and promote her slightly less fatty cuisine. Just don't expect her to throw out that tub of butter completely.

"I am who I am. But what I will be doing is offering up lighter versions of my recipes," the Food Network star told The Associated Press at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival on Friday. "I will have a broader platform now, trying to do something for everybody. But you know, I'm Southern by roots. I was taught [to cook] by my grandmother and nothing I can do would change that."

Paula Deen: I have Type 2 diabetes

Deen stands by her on-air cooking style, but clarifies that she'll also include healthier recipes into the mix to appeal to more people. The cook has made some other changes in her personal life, including walking on a treadmill, quitting smoking and cutting out sweet tea.

Deen received backlash in January when she revealed she had known about her diabetes for three years prior but had continued to promote her butter- and fat-laden recipes. "It took me 20 years to come out and stand up and say, 'Hey, my name's Paula and I'm agoraphobic,'" she said. "I was so ashamed, so embarrassed. So to [reveal my diabetes] in two-and-a-half years, I thought it was pretty good."

She also received criticism for capitalizing on her diagnosis by becoming the paid spokesperson for Novo Nordisk's drug Victoza and online program, Diabetes in a New Light. Deen shrugged it off, however, and said, "It's the way of the world. It's the American way. But I am taking a portion of that compensation and giving it back to the [American] Diabetes Association."

At the time she revealed her diabetes, fellow food TV personality Anthony Bourdain was very vocal about his disapproval, telling Eater.com, "When your signature dish is hamburger in between a doughnut, and you've been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you've got Type 2 diabetes ... It's in bad taste if nothing else."

"I think a few people who have access to a TV camera and ink kind of wanted to hate on me for coming down with something," she told the AP. "But I so don't worry about it."

I have a small C sharp based program developed in Australia which links to quickbooks. It basically is a flow chart approach managing our jobs from when they quoting stage to completion on site. It lists all our customer base and their related jobs. The jobs then have a tree of folders which all the jobs informations is stored under. The software has a basic schedule which the delivery date is updated in and controlled from. I need an iphone app to access certain areas of this software check and update status and extract reports.

PHOENIX - Ryan Braun wants everybody to know that he didn't do it. And that he resents the accusations, speculation and erroneous reports that he did.

No, there is no personal medical issue, he's never had an STD, and he passed 25 other drug tests in his career, including three others in 2011.

He isn't happy with the initial MLB reaction that he beat the 50-game suspension on PED charges on a sample-collection protocol technicality.

And, he's considering all legal options in light of everything that has made the last four months, 'the biggest challenge I've ever faced in my life.''

This wasn't Andy Pettitte standing before gathered media, admitting he had used human growth hormone, saying he was sorry, and asking for forgiveness.

This was Braun vowing during a 25-minute press conference on the field at Maryvale Baseball Park on Friday, "If I had done this intentionally or unintentionally, I'd be the first one to step up and say I did it. I truly believe in my heart, and I'd bet my life that this substance never entered my body at any point.''

So a whole new set of questions needs to be examined.

What we have here is a complete reversal in MLB's never-ending PEDs mess. After the game ignored ever-increasing usage from the late 1980s to early-2000s, we've reached the point where players are tied to a testing process in which ? in Braun's words -- they are, "100 percent guilty until proven innocent ? opposite of the American judicial situation."

Not only was Braun's situation wrongly and unfairly leaked to the media by a still-unknown source, even when the hearing produced a not-guilty verdict, the accusers don't want to accept that verdict.

"The system as it was applied to me in this case was fatally flawed," Braun said.

If, as Braun said, "I tried to handle the entire situation with honor, with integrity, with class, with dignity, and with professionalism, because that's who I am, and that's how I've always lived my life," what exactly went on here?

Braun says he knows full well the feeling of being wrongly accused, but nonetheless intimated a possible scenario.

What we do know is that the sample was taken after NLDS Game 1 on Oct. 1 in Milwaukee, along with those of two other teammates. The next 44 hours ? the length of time from when Braun's sample was taken until it was sent by the collector to the lab ? remains in question in the minds of Braun and his handlers.

Why the delay, when Braun says FedEx offices were open until 9:30 p.m. Saturday ? plenty of time after the game that afternoon? And what happened to the sample in that time ? was it stored properly, was it altered in some way at that point? How did he test three times over the allowable limit after passing all those other tests ? including one taken after he received word on Oct. 19 of the positive test result?

"There are a lot of things that we learned about the collector, and the collection process that made us very concerned and suspicious about what could have happened," Braun said.

We're likely to find out the answers to all these questions soon enough, of course. But regardless if the sample was tampered with maliciously, or just by the result of human error, Braun's reputation severely has been damaged.

Can he restore it? And don't changes have to be made to the collection process? This situation is far from over, and very well could be a precedent-setter.

"We won because the truth was on my side," Braun said. "I was a victim of a process that completely broke down and failed. Today is about making sure this never happens to anyone else who plays this game."

MLB players better hope so, because another ugly can of worms in the ongoing PEDs saga has been opened ? if Braun's words indeed are true.

Common prenatal tests become campaign issue

WASHINGTON (AP) ? First birth control, now prenatal testing? Once again a fact of life for many American women has become a jarring issue in the presidential race.

Republican candidate Rick Santorum is making free screenings for birth defects part of his attack on President Barack Obama's health care law. Santorum, who has a young daughter with a serious genetic disorder, said rules requiring insurers to cover prenatal tests are designed to encourage more women to have abortions that will "cull the ranks of the disabled in our society."

Obama re-election campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith called Santorum's remarks "misinformed and dangerous." She said the tests are for the health of mothers and babies and help bring about safer deliveries.

Federal health officials and the nation's obstetricians recommend that all pregnant women be offered blood tests and an ultrasound exam that assess the risk of having a baby with various birth defects or genetic disorders, including Down syndrome. If the screening raises concern, a woman may choose further testing, such as amniocentesis.

How did these commonplace tests spark so much controversy?

?Some women don't want the tests because they know they wouldn't abort their fetus no matter what the results. Others who wouldn't consider an abortion still want the tests ? seeking reassurance that all is well or, if not, the chance to adjust emotionally and prepare for a disabled baby's more complicated care. Babies with Down syndrome can need specialized attention at delivery that affects hospital selection.

?Some women avoid amniocentesis, which involves withdrawing amniotic fluid through a needle, because of the small chance it could cause a miscarriage. There are less invasive tests available, however, and newer ones on the way.

?As Santorum noted, studies show that in the vast majority of cases where amniocentesis reveals Down syndrome, women decide on abortion.

?Advocates for the disabled, including many parents of Down syndrome children, worry that couples are choosing abortion without considering that their child could lead a happy, fulfilling life. About one in 800 babies is born with Down syndrome, a condition in which having an extra chromosome causes mental retardation, a characteristic broad, flat face and, often, serious heart defects.

The prenatal testing issues have been debated by abortion foes and obstetricians and wrestled with by prospective parents. 3 skiers killed in Wash. avalanche

SEATTLE ? Authorities said three men have died in an avalanche in an out-of-bounds area near a popular Washington state ski area. Other skiers who had been reported missing were accounted for on Sunday.?

Sgt. Cindi West of the King County Sheriff's Office confirmed to msnbc.com the deaths of three people. The skiers were believed to be in their 30s and 40s, experienced and well-prepared.

Other skiers in the group managed to dig out the men and performed CPR, to no avail.

According to King5.com, one skier, a woman, was wearing a device used to provide air if swept up in an avalanche.?She survived.

West said the slide occurred in an out-of-bounds area near Stevens Pass ski resort in the Cascade Mountains, about 13.2 miles east of the town of Skykomish.

In a separate incident in the Cascades on Sunday, a snowboarder died after plunging off a cliff, West said. According to the Seattle Times, the snowboarder, age 41, triggered an avalanche that pushed him over a cliff.

The Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center on Sunday issued a warning for high avalanche danger for areas above 5,000 feet. The elevation of the avalanche wasn't immediately clear.

At mid-afternoon, the temperate at the base of the ski resort was 24 degrees, with light winds and good visibility. The temperature at the top of the mountain was 22 degrees, according to the resort's website.

The site also said Sunday was a "popular powder day" at the resort, with 14 inches of fresh snow falling overnight.

Stevens Pass, an 80-mile drive from Seattle, is among the most popular outdoor recreation areas in the state. People flock there to go cross-country, back-country and downhill skiing, as well as snowshoeing and backpacking.

It's been a deadly winter in Washington state's mountains. Four people disappeared in vicious storms while hiking and climbing on Mount Rainier last month.

Across the West, there had been 13 avalanche deaths this season as of Feb. 16, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, which tracks avalanche deaths in the U.S.

Avalanche deaths are more common in the backcountry than at ski resorts. Out of about 900 avalanche deaths nationwide since the 1950-1951 winter, 32 were within terrain that was open for riding at ski resorts, according to the Utah Avalanche Center.

Cirque du Soleil plans performance for Oscar show

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Aerialists, acrobats and contortionists from Cirque du Soleil are among the guests at this year's Academy Awards.

The three-minute performance at the Oscars on Feb. 26 will be among the international troupe's biggest yet, said Cirque du Soleil special events director Yasmine Khalil, featuring more than 50 artists. Most Cirque shows employ 75 to 80 artists over two hours, she said.

Cirque du Soleil has a show now at the Kodak Theatre, where the Oscars will be presented, but the performance for the awards telecast is "unique for this one evening" and not taken from any of the troupe's 22 productions playing around the world.

Performers from those shows, however, are heading to Hollywood. Khalil says artists from Japan and Russia are flying in to participate in the Academy Awards segment.

"The theme is very much in line with paying tribute to the movie-theater experience," Khalil said, adding it was different from "Iris," Cirque's show at the Kodak Theater, which is billed as "a journey into the world of cinema."

Like "Iris," the music for the troupe's Oscar performance was composed by Danny Elfman.

Cirque du Soleil troupes were reluctant to perform on television in years past "because we felt as though a lot of it got lost in translation," Khalil said, but they appreciated the way their performance came across in the 74th Academy Awards.

"That boosted our confidence knowing that we're comfortable in front of the camera," she said.

Khalil and the performers have been working on their routine since before Christmas.

"To capture 50 people jumping around everywhere from the ceiling and from the ground and right and left and center, it's a whole added challenge," she said.

That challenge extends to the viewers, too.

"They should be very attentive," she said. "You don't want to be blinking too much because you might miss something."

Dead pile up after massive Honduran prison blaze (Reuters)

COMAYAGUA, Honduras (Reuters) ? Police and soldiers dragged out the charred remains of convicts in black body bags, hurling them onto a pile outside a Honduran prison where over 350 people died on Tuesday night, choking and screaming as they were engulfed in flames.

As the darkness deepened in Comayagua National Penitentiary, north of the capital Tegucigalpa, the last remaining bereaved family members melted away. But groups of workers continued to stack up bodies, which landed with heavy thuds.

"The corpses are charred and some of them are stuck on top of each other," said Johnny Ordenez, a Honduran soldier lugging the dead. "You have to peel them apart like an orange."

Hondurans already live in the most murderous country on the planet, according to a United Nations report last year. But the Comayagua fire, apparently started by one of the prisoners, was one of the worst prison blazes anywhere in history.

As the inferno raged, some of the 850 or so inmates managed to force their way to safety through the tin roofs of the prison, a dark maze-like structure with narrow open-air hallways lined with white and blue brick walls.

But by the time the media were allowed in, there was still evidence of those who did not escape the gutted complex, where the smell of charred flesh hung heavily in the air.

One scorched cadaver lay face down on the floor, both legs pulled up close to the fetal position, with its arm outstretched into the corner of the cell. Two police and a soldier arrived to drag it away, to place it in the heap of bodies.

Nearby in a recreational area, an acoustic guitar lay on a blood-soaked floor next to the burned remnants of pool tables.

Loaded up onto trailers, the dead were sent to a morgue in Tegucigalpa, where relatives waited expectantly.

"I'm here for my son's body, I must bury him, my wife and the rest of my family are waiting for me," said Octavo Aguilera, a 59-year-old agricultural worker. "I'm not leaving here without him."

ESCAPE FROM THE FLAMES

The attorney general's office put the death toll at 359. The police said some of those presumed dead may have escaped.

Survivors accused guards of ignoring their calls for help, and reported horrific scenes of suffering as trapped convicts struggled to escape before the fire consumed them, as they were trapped in their cells.

"'Guards, we're burning, we're dying, open the cells.' But the guards didn't want to help, they let the people die," survivor Antonio Valladaras, told local radio.

Some angry relatives of inmates blamed the government for the inferno, which the provincial governor said had apparently been caused by a prisoner lighting his mattress. It was not clear why the inmate would have started the fire.

Outside the prison, police looked on impassively as dozens of friends and relatives of the convicts threw sticks at them, shouting "Murderers".

Racked by gang violence, drug cartels and poverty, Honduras has struggled to maintain law and order since a coup in 2009 divided the already troubled Central American nation.

At more than 80 homicides per 100,000 people in 2009, Honduras' murder rate is 16 times that of the United States, according to the U.N. study.

Its jails are overflowing with prisoners, and Honduras had suffered serious blazes at prisons in the past decade.

But the degree of slaughter in Comayagua has thrown the country's problems into sharp relief, said Dana Frank, an expert on Honduras at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

"We're talking about a total breakdown of the state," she said.
