In waning daylight, a satellite snapped Hurricane Isaac at 6:46 p.m. local time as the massive storm made landfall at Plaquemines Parish, about 95 miles (153 km) east of New Orleans.Image: NOAA
When Hurricane Isaac swept ashore as a Category 1 storm, its destructive power seemingly took some by surprise. As images of submerged houses and news of dramatic rooftop rescues made the rounds, the Web was abuzz with expressions of disbelief that a mere "Cat 1" storm could be the culprit for the catastrophe unfolding before people's eyes.
"Man that's just too much water to be a Category 1 or tropical storm," wrote @KeepNUpWithMike, reflecting the sentiments of many Twitter users.
Yet these labels ? Category 1 hurricane, tropical storm? are based only on top sustained wind speeds. And although that's important, it's by no means the only factor that determines a storm's appetite for destruction, explained Tim Schott, a meteorologist at National Weather Service headquarters in Silver Spring, Md. "There are other factors that can be critical as well," he told OurAmazingPlanet.
However, none of these other factors are used to rank hurricanes on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. And some scientists argue that since the labels reflect only one facet of a storm's destructive power, it's time to change the way we categorize tropical storms and hurricanes.
Yet all forecasters emphasized that storms that are comparatively low on the hurricane scale can still cause horrific damage.
"A lot of the news media and people in general have noted this is only a Category 1 storm, but [Isaac's effects] show that Category 1 is just the description of the winds," Schott said. [Images: Hurricane Isaac Packs a Punch]
Causes of destruction
Along with wind speed, the sheer size of a storm, how quickly it is moving and the angle at which it's approaching land also influence its potential to wreak havoc. Isaac possessed some of the most menacing of these qualities.
First, Isaac is simply a big storm, said Chris Landsea, the science and operations officer at the National Hurricane Center in Miami. "Ever since it formed, it's been a large tropical cyclone," he told OurAmazingPlanet.
Bigger storms have a wider reach, affecting more people, and they're also tied to more severe storm surge, or "the ocean being pushed ashore," as Landsea described it.
"Isaac's storm surge is extended all the way to the Florida panhandle," Schott said, adding that parts of Louisiana have seen inundation as high as 11 feet (3 meters).
Isaac is also moving slowly. The storm crept along at about 6 mph (9 kph) for most of Tuesday and Wednesday, and is moving at 8 mph (13 kph) today (Aug. 30) ? a snail's pace for a storm. That means it's hammering the same areas with heavy downpours for hours, even days, at a time.
Even relatively wimpy storms can cause terrible damage if they stay parked in place, Landsea and Schott said, since the unending rains can spark inland flooding. Isaac has reportedly dropped some 23 inches (58 centimeters) of rain near Gretna, La., according to unofficial numbers from the National Hurricane Center.
The direction of a storm's approach also plays a role in its destructive power ? certain angles promote greater storm surge, said Robert Henson, a meteorologist who works as a science writer for the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, in Boulder, Colo.

1. Aggressiveness
BYU came out ready to play Thursday night. The 2011 team started slow and played from behind, but this year's squad came out firing, looking to make big plays early.
2. Confidence
No one doubts Riley Nelson has plenty of confidence to go around, but for the rest of the team, early success led to a snowball effect that culminated in an ability to play from ahead vs. having to play catch-up.
3. Adaptability
Bronco Mendenhall has been notorious for coming in with a game plan and sticking to it, whether that be from game to game, half to half or even season to season. Tonight's opener showed he is willing to open up the offense and let the players make plays. And rather than stick with one thing and one thing only, Mendenhall threw freshman QB Taysom Hill into the action. Hill responded by throwing a touchdown pass for BYU's second score of the game.

Being ?female-friendly? should really be a given, not something unique and worthy of announcement! But unfortunately for our automotive repair industry, there is a general perception of mistrust and also anxiety among women when it comes to bringing their vehicles in for services. We understand that, and we also see that women are the majority of our customers these days. I like to believe that is true because word has gotten around that we are a place they can trust.
So when I learned about AskPatty?, I knew it was a program I wanted us to embrace. AskPatty.com is a web site dedicated to providing women with a safe and reliable source for expert automotive advice and research. To become a certified member of their program, our staff had to go through several hours of training to improve their communication skills and learn why sometimes women?s expectations and reactions can be different from those of men. Much of what our guys learned in the training was familiar to them already, but there were some new ideas introduced, so it was definitely worthwhile. Now we are proud to display our official AskPatty certificates and are pleased that we have another way to show potential customers what makes us different! We are dedicated to doing all we can to change the negative perceptions so many people, in particular women, have about our industry, and we applaud AskPatty for providing a powerful and valuable option for women car owners everywhere.
If you live outside of our service area, be sure to go to www.askpatty.com and search for a certified female-friendly shop in your vicinity! If you are looking for a new car, there are also certified auto dealers in their program. Happy shopping!

While LG clearly thinks there's still some life in the super-wide format, Philips isn't so sure. In fact, the electronics stalwart has apparently just announced that it won't be releasing any more 21:9 TVs, due to lack of interest. Despite having regularly released new extra-wide sets since 2009, including 3D models, according to FlatpanelsHD, a spokesperson confirmed that demand barely meets the firm's requirements for mass production, and as such it's no longer viable. That's not to say that Philips is bowing out of big screens altogether though -- on the contrary -- it goes on to state that 50-inch screens, and above, are becoming increasingly important. For now, however, it looks like it'll be back to good old 16:9.
Prior to 2009, many injured plaintiffs were most concerned with investing their settlement proceeds in the stock and real estate markets. Since 2009, I have seen a shift in focus. The largest concern by injured plaintiffs today is outliving their money. There is good cause for worry.
A recent article posted on MarketWatch cites a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research showing that 46% of American retirees have just $10,000 when they die. While people can live with limited savings, the study?s findings are a reminder of how fragile our economic conditions are if a financial emergency occurs. A structured settlement that prepares for unforeseen medical and other uncertainties during retirement means injured parties can enjoy financial peace of mind when it matters most.

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Paul Ryan is preparing for the biggest speech of his career on Wednesday, when he will accept the Republican vice presidential nomination in front of a television audience of tens of millions of voters.
Style experts hope he'll find some time to do some clothes shopping as well.
Ryan's budget-cutting plan has made him one of the most polarizing figures in U.S. politics, but many of those who know fashion agree on one thing: The man needs serious help with his wardrobe.
When Mitt Romney added Ryan to the Republican ticket this month, fashion experts panned the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman's duck-billed loafers, floppy shirt collars and baggy suits.
GQ, the men's magazine, called Ryan's boxy black suit a "suburban dad special," while Esquire compared it to a trash bag. Women's Wear Daily called his choice of square-toed shoes "one of the most grievous mistakes a man can make."
Ryan looks "like a boy wearing his father's suit," said Jesse Thorn, editor of the menswear blog Put This On.
Ryan probably won't need the support of fashionistas to win the vice presidency on November 6, but some clothing experts wonder whether voters might conclude that a man who wears suits that seem to be a couple of sizes too large isn't ready to be one heartbeat away from the Oval Office.
"If the suit's too big for him, it seems like the job is too big for him," said Laurie Graham, a Los Angeles image consultant who works with business clients.
Ryan also gets low marks for wearing his suit without a tie, an increasingly popular look among political candidates striving for the approachable look.
"To me it looks like they had to run out of the house because it was on fire," said David Hodgkins, owner of David Wood Clothiers in Portland, Maine. "It's incomplete, it's like a shoe without shoelaces."
HOTTEST VEEP CANDIDATE EVER?
Ryan's appearance could be a reflection of his monk-like focus on fiscal policy. A wonk's wonk, Ryan is known for sleeping in his Capitol Hill office and staying up late studying budget tables, rather than hitting Washington's party scene.
"I wonder if there was some point in his life when he was 15 or 20 pounds heavier, and went into a Men's Wearhouse, had himself measured and wrote it down for posterity," Thorn said.
Ryan's poorly fitting suits threaten to obscure looks that routinely are described as boyishly handsome and a body that has been toned by the vigorous P90X fitness regimen.
TMZ, a gossip website, wrote that Ryan might be "the hottest vice presidential candidate ever." The Hill, a newspaper that covers Congress, named him one of the 50 most attractive people in politics in 2008.
"Forget the budget: Paul Ryan is hot!" wrote Politico, another publication for Washington insiders.
WARDROBE MALFUNCTIONS
Unlike female politicians whose clothing and hairstyle choices are dissected endlessly, male politicians typically enjoy less scrutiny and face fewer fashion risks.
For decades, the choice of lawmakers and officials has been a dark suit with a white shirt and red or blue solid tie to convey an aura of power and authority. President Ronald Reagan's brown suits were a rare exception, but they helped to bolster his image as a western outsider with few ties to Washington.
Clothing, however, occasionally can trip up male politicians.
Vice President Al Gore was mocked during the 2000 presidential campaign for heeding the advice of a consultant who told him to wear earth tones. And President Barack Obama drew snickers when he was photographed in high-waisted "dad jeans" a few years ago.
President George H.W. Bush only deepened his blue-blooded reputation when he argued that he wasn't a "Brooks Brothers Republican" because he wore J. Press suits - another brand favored by old-money New Englanders.
For political candidates, a sudden fashion transformation doesn't always work out.
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin traded in her turtlenecks and fleece vests for designer outfits after she was chosen as Republican John McCain's vice presidential running mate in 2008. But the $150,000 cost of the makeover led to uncomfortable questions for the campaign, particularly when it became clear that the Republican Party had paid for the clothes.
For Ryan, it won't be too difficult to up his sartorial game when he takes the podium at the Republican convention in Tampa on Wednesday night, fashion experts say.
Black cap-toe shoes, a dark, slim-fitting suit from a maker such as Brooks Brothers or Southwick, a white shirt and a solid or striped tie would convey confidence and authority, menswear experts said. Most importantly, it would not distract from the message Ryan hopes to convey to voters.
"It's his job to look responsible," Thorn said. "His priority should be to look like he has his act together."
?And Adam called his wife?s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living? (Gen. 3:20). By a special act of creation, God created woman, mothers, and motherhood. I would like to wield the pen and strike a blow for motherhood at least one more time before the term becomes completely meaningless, or even extinct. Mothers are already an endangered species in our modern society, and if some continue to have their way with respect to abortion and the deterioration of family values, the extinction of motherhood may become more fact than fable.
All are agreed that many of our social and moral problems are a direct result of deterioration in the home. Yet, not enough are willing to do anything about the problem. According to the latest statistics, well over half of all mothers work outside the home. And, the time and emphasis spent on being a mother suffers accordingly. Again, if some feminists and like-minded ?liberators? of womanhood and motherhood have their way, all mothers will be out of the home and the children left over from the effects of abortion will all be turned over to surrogate day-care centers which will be partially or completely supported by taxes. Even those of us who are trying to salvage the institution of motherhood will be forced to support those practices which are destroying the very thing we are striving to save.
As in most matters, there are exceptions to the general rule. We recognize situations which are affected by widowhood, shiftless fathers and husbands, childless couples, or even homes where the children are grown and gone. But the exception is supposed to prove the rule, not become the rule.
A lot of emphasis is being made on the matter of ?pro-choice? and a woman?s right to fulfill her own ambitions. Should not at least equal rights be accorded those women who choose to remain in the home and make motherhood their number one priority in life? These latter are fast becoming the minority, and are beginning to be regarded as second-class women. I believe that we should take the time in our speech, and space in our writing, to commend every woman who wants to devote all of her time to being a woman, a wife, and a mother.
The Bible is filled with examples of ?mothers of Israel? who emulate and exonerate the institution of motherhood. One mother?s love for her child was so strong that she was willing to let an impostor have her child rather than see the child put to death (1 Kings 3:26, 27). But, another mother encouraged her daughter to dance before a king and to have John the Baptist?s head cut off (Matt. 14:3-11). We have all seen children creating havoc in stores, church buildings, and other public places while their mothers were either nowhere to be seen or were totally oblivious to the actions or safety of their own offspring. News headlines and police blotters are filled with accounts of child neglect, and even abuse and murder. But I noticed something last summer that reaffirmed my faith in mothers and motherhood.
Several mothers were together while their offspring played nearby. It was difficult to tell which offspring be- longed to which mother, but all of the mothers seemed to be keeping an eye out for the little ones. If a problem seemed to be developing, one of the mothers would go check it out. If some bully began to mistreat his or her playmates, a mother would discipline the rebel. On one occasion, the father intervened in a squabble, and sent one of the big bullies sailing with its tail tucked between its legs. I mean, literally. You see, I live in the country, and a herd of cows and calves graze, feed, sleep, and play in the field by our house. And as J.D. Tant used to say, ?Before God,? these cows acted more like mothers than do some mothers of the human race. I noticed that some mothers saw to it that their calves were fed and cared for even before the mother?s own personal ambitions were satisfied. My heart took hope. If all else fails, maybe we can turn to the beasts of the field and the fowl of the air for some basic lessons in mother- hood. Once we learn the basics, we can begin reading our Bibles instead of reading after psychologists intoxicated with human wisdom, and listen to the Lord instead of some self-styled liberator who only wants to bring the women and children of our country into bondage of the flesh.
I wrote the following poem in 1988 when I was in a meeting at Monticello, Florida. The sister in whose home we were staying received a telephone message one day that her mother had died. I noticed tears in her eyes when she hung up the phone. I can?t stop tears for mothers, but maybe I can help fellow pilgrims see through them more clearly.
A Tear for Mother
There are, it seems, so many kinds of tears
Those born of pain, of sadness, and tears of joy as well;
Some kind will follow us all through our years
But we?ll grow wiser since that first, lone teardrop fell.
?
We have a different feeling in our heart
For father, sister, brother, children, loved ones all;
It?s there when first we meet and when we part,
Renewed by mem?ries, songs, by pictures on the wall.
?
For mothers, too, we have a special love
Because the love they give is special, diff?rent still;

Study examines factors associated with improvement in survival from heart attack in FrancePublic release date: 27-Aug-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

CHICAGO The overall rate of death in patients hospitalized with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI; a certain pattern on an electrocardiogram following a heart attack) decreased from 1995 to 2010 in France, with possible factors associated with this decline including an increase in the proportion of STEMI patients who were women younger than age 60, and an increase in the use of reperfusion therapy and recommended therapeutic measures following a heart attack, according to a study being published online by JAMA. The study is being released early to coincide with its presentation at the European Society of Cardiology Congress.
"Several sources, including registries specific to acute myocardial infarction [AMI; heart attack] and large administrative or billing databases, have shown a decrease in mortality in patients with STEMI over the past 10 to 15 years. This decline is usually attributed to increased use and improved delivery of reperfusion therapy, in particular primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI; procedures such as balloon angioplasty or stent placement used to open narrowed coronary arteries). We hypothesized that, beyond primary PCI, other factors such as temporal changes in patient population characteristics may account for part of the observed reduction in mortality of patients with STEMI," the authors write.
Etienne Puymirat, M.D., of the Hpital Europen Georges Pompidou, Paris, and colleagues conducted a study to assess the association between changes in early mortality following STEMI and patient management and risk profile. The researchers analyzed data from four 1-month French nationwide registries, conducted 5 years apart (in 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010), which included a total of 6,707 STEMI patients admitted to intensive care or coronary care units.
During the study period, the average age of patients with STEMI declined from 66.2 years to 63.3 years, and history of cardiovascular disease, such as heart attack, heart failure, peripheral artery disease, stroke or transient ischemic attack also decreased. The proportion of younger women (60 years or less) with STEMI increased from 11.8 percent to 25.5 percent, consistent with their increased prevalence of smoking (from 37.3 percent to 73.1 percent) and obesity (from 17.6 percent to 27.1 percent). The proportion of younger patients developing STEMI despite not having hypertension, diabetes, or hypercholesterolemia increased markedly, particularly in younger women.
The authors also found that the use of reperfusion therapy increased over time, from 49.4 percent to 74.7 percent, with more frequent use of primary PCI, (11.9 percent to 60.8 percent). The use of evidence-based treatments during the first 48 hours from admission increased gradually over the 15-year period, including the early use of b-blockers, ACE inhibitors or angiotensin-receptor blockers, and statins. Also, there was increasing early use of antiplatelet agents and low-molecular-weight heparins.
Thirty-day mortality decreased from 13.7 percent in 1995 to 4.4 percent in 2010; mortality decreased from 9.8 percent to 2.6 percent in men and from 23.7 percent to 9.8 percent in women. Consistent with the decrease in mortality, major hospital complications of STEMI also decreased over this time period.
In addition, time from symptom onset to hospital admission decreased, with a shorter time from onset to first call, and broader use of mobile intensive care units.
"The progressive decline in early mortality over time observed in the present nationwide surveys is consistent with many other sources in the United States and Europe," the authors note.
"Within the STEMI population targeted by these sequential registries, the relative proportion of older patients has decreased, while the proportion of younger men and the proportion and numbers of younger women have increased. These observations suggest that future reductions in the incidence and mortality related to AMI will need specific targeting of preventive measures toward younger women and possibly younger men."

The German health officials were finally able to trace the disease back to soybeans grown on a farm in northern Germany, but not for at least 39 people died.Storing large companies simply did not want to deal with multi-million dollar lawsuits against them with contaminated food, are requiring suppliers to develop processes, requirements and tests -. As such certified products are BPA ? - as protection against pathogens are present in their products.
Private companies are ahead of the government, and many are now requiring a third inspection of products, he said. There is no policy for the private food industry ? is the bottom line that drives things.
Not all strains of E. coli are harmful. However, the strain that caused the outbreak in Germany is highly pathogenic.
But the regulation is moot on the market, supported Laborde, because food security has been pushed to buyers. Any buyer ? a massive supermarket chain ? has its own standards which require manufacturers and are becoming increasingly difficult. Small farmers and operations of large companies must comply.
Laborde noted that the testing and regulation of the government is increasingly controversial in some circles because it adds cost and makes the food more expensive, but the policy and food safety are inconsistent when people start getting sick because of food-borne illness.
In the United States, the seeds are usually pre-treated with concentrated bleach and wash water flows through the shoots are collected and tested for bacteria such as E. coli, Laborde said.
In retrospect, it is not surprising that the shoots were determined to be the cause of the outbreak of E. We have long known that the sprouts may be a problem, he said. Seeds can be contaminated by bacteria in the manure of animals in the field or during storage after harvest.
Maybe that was not done in Germany, he said. Increasingly in this country, we test the water for irrigation and washing water contamination. And ?monitoring generally much here.
Laborde said that the new Law on Food Safety recently approved in this country, contains provisions that allow scientists and government agencies on food safety to trace their origins to the fast food company.
The process used to germinate seeds is ideal for growing pathogens, said Laborde. The nutrients are abundant, with high humidity levels ? and warm temperatures necessary for the germination process to help ensure the survival and growth of bacteria, he said.
The seeds that farmers buy cabbage growth may be contaminated with no indication they are dangerous to use, he said. This will just continue to use this seed until someone said, ?Hey, that make people sick.
The misuse of germs during production, packaging and distribution has rarely been implicated as the source of contamination germinate. However, the bacteria already present in the germination of seeds can continue to prosper, if management does not have good food techniques practiced during the harvesting, processing and preparation.
You can not reverse the contamination, and as cabbages are grown, if there is even the smallest amount of contamination may increase significantly and make people sick.
Now, every product or container must include information on where a food was grown or created. And because contamination can occur in the transport and storage processing, the information on those, too, are recorded and stored, Laborde said.
Physicians should regularly provide to all patients over 13 years of a blood test for HIV, the American College of Physicians calls for new guidelines.

A small plane crash in Pacoima, Calif. injured two people on board.
LOS ANGELES -- Authorities say a small plane has crash-landed in a business district in Southern California's San Fernando Valley, striking two cars and injuring the two people on board.
Nobody on the ground was hurt.
Los Angeles Police Officer Norma Eisenman says the plane went down just before noon Saturday in the Pacoima area, not far from Whiteman Airport.
Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott says one person on board was seriously hurt and the other suffered moderate injuries.
Scott says the plane went down between two buildings in a business district. Two vehicles and an awning on one building were damaged.
There was no fire, but fuel leaked from the crashed plane.
Investigators weren't immediately sure whether the plane had originated at Whiteman Airport.
Manuel Ilagan, one of the jurors in the landmark U.S. Apple vs. Samsung trial, which resulted in a sweeping $1 billion victory for Apple yesterday, has revealed that they, the jury, knew after the first day that Samsung had wronged Apple. The revelation comes as Ilagan began speaking to CNET's Greg Sandoval about what was going through the jury's mind during the trial and the deliberation that followed.
Well, there were several [pieces of compelling evidence]. The e-mails that went back and forth from Samsung execs about the Apple features that they should incorporate into their devices was pretty damning to me. And also on the last day they showed the pictures of the phones that Samsung made before the iPhone came out and ones that they made after iPhone came out. Some of the Samsung executives they presented on video from Korea, I thought they were dodging the questions. They didn't answer one of them. They didn't help their cause.
The jury not only found Samsung in violation of several Apple patents, but in willful violation, which could potential increase damages in the post-trial phase that follows. Samsung will try to get the decision reversed or the damages lowered, Apple will try to get Samsung devices banned and the damages as much as trebled in some areas.
While a jury in one case, in one jurisdiction can't be extrapolated into the larger, world wide Apple vs. Samsung patent dispute, the narrative Apple was able to tell, the momentum given to them by the victory, and what Ilagan is revealing about this jury's take on the strength of Apple's case should be carefully considered by all parties going forward.
CNET's interview with Manuel Ilagan is ongoing. You can follow along via the link below.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney's success in raising hundreds of millions of dollars in the costliest presidential race ever can be traced in part to a secretive data-mining project that sifts through Americans' personal information ? including their purchasing history and church attendance ? to identify new and likely, wealthy donors, The Associated Press has learned.
For the data-mining project, the Republican candidate has quietly employed since at least June a little-known but successful analytics firm that previously performed marketing work for a colleague tied to Bain & Co., the management-consulting firm that Romney once led.
The head of Buxton Co. of Fort Worth, Texas, chief executive Tom Buxton, confirmed to the AP his company's efforts to help Romney identify rich and previously untapped Republican donors across the country. The Romney campaign declined to discuss on the record its work with Buxton or the project's overall success.
The project shows that the same strategies corporations use to influence the way we shop and think are now being used to influence presidential elections. The same personal information that we give away, often unwittingly when we swipe our credit cards or log into Facebook, is now being collected by the people who might one day occupy the White House.
There are no records of payments to Buxton from Romney's campaign, the Republican National Committee or a joint fundraising committee. Under federal law, companies cannot use corporate money or resources, such as proprietary data analysis, for in-kind contributions to campaigns.
The effort by Romney appears to be the first example of a political campaign using such extensive data analysis. President Barack Obama's re-election campaign has long been known as data-savvy, but Romney's project appears to take a page from the Fortune 500 business world and dig deeper into available consumer data.
Buxton said he's working for the Romney campaign because he wants "to be on the winning team."
He once worked with a former Romney business partner to provide insights, for example, about where Petco should open a new pet-supply store to maximize profits. In addition to Buxton, the data-mining project was described to the AP by a Romney fundraiser who spoke on condition of anonymity because the fundraiser did not want to face repercussions for describing internal campaign processes.
Businesses use those kinds of analytics firms to answer key questions for clients, such as where to build a retail store or where to mail pamphlets touting a new product. The analysis doesn't directly bring in campaign contributions, but it generates the equivalent of sales leads for Romney's campaign.
The project relies upon a sophisticated analysis by powerful computers of thousands of commercially available, expensive databases that are lawfully bought and sold behind the scenes by corporations, including details about credit accounts, families and children, voter registrations, charitable contributions, property tax records and survey responses. It combines marketing data with what is known in this specialized industry as psychographic information about Americans.
An early test analyzed details of more than 2 million households near San Francisco and elsewhere on the West Coast and identified thousands of people who would be comfortably able and inclined to give Romney at least $2,500 or more.
An AP analysis this week determined that Romney's campaign has made impressive inroads into even traditionally Democratic neighborhoods, collecting more than $350,000 this summer around San Francisco in contributions that averaged $400 each. High-dollar donors have been essential to Romney's election effort, unlike Obama, who relies on more contributors giving smaller amounts.
Romney and the GOP have out-fundraised Obama's re-election effort for the past three months.
The fate of the presidency may depend on who raises more money in the campaign, whose cost for the first time is approaching $2 billion. That figure includes hundreds of millions of dollars spent by "super" political committees that accept unlimited and in some cases effectively anonymous contributions from millionaires, companies, labor groups and others to pay for television campaign advertisements across the nation.
Buxton confirmed that the data-mining project began with the help of Dick Boyce, Romney's former Bain & Co. colleague, after Romney joined fundraising forces with the Republican National Committee. Buxton expressed such confidence in his business and analysis methods that, in nearly two decades of running his firm, he told AP he has always been able to answer essential questions for customers.
"I can look at data of any kind and say, 'I want to know who that $100 donor could be,'" Buxton said. "We look at data of any kind."
Obama's campaign employs its own form of data analysis to lure potential supporters, via Facebook and Twitter, to fine-tune messages for supporters and potential donors. The Obama campaign declined to comment on its internal fundraising practices, although Buxton said it doesn't work with Obama's campaign.
Romney's campaign has also been secretive about how it raises its money, and most fundraising events have been closed to the press. Unlike Obama, Romney's campaign has declined to publicly identify the names of major fundraisers, known as bundlers, who have helped amass much of its money. Details of this project have not been made public until now, as payments to Buxton aren't reflected in federal campaign expense reports.
Buxton is not listed as a vendor in any of the campaign's reports submitted to the Federal Election Commission, although some campaigns do not report expenses until the vendor sends them a bill.
When AP initially asked Buxton about its work for Romney, it declined to acknowledge that it helped raise money for the RNC, even as its own website displayed a prominent log-in page for "2012 presidential donor prospecting." That web address contained the letters "RNC" ? a common abbreviation for the Republican National Committee. After the AP's continued questioning, the company replaced the "RNC" letters in the web address with a generic "campaign" the next day.
This is not Buxton's first foray into politics: In 2006, the company produced 1,000 names for a Connecticut campaign to meet a write-in ballot requirement, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram then reported, and 900 of them signed up.
Few in Washington campaign circles recognized the work of Buxton, although it lists thousands of other clients in the public and private sector, including hospitals and local governments.
