A lot of people don?t really know where to start when it comes to estate planning. If you?re having difficulty it can be a good exercise to look at estate planning concerns when you are planning for your next vacation. Traveling often brings up some important issues related to estate planning that you will want to consider carefully before going on your next vacation.
What would happen if you were injured?
You don?t have to go white-water rafting, mountain climbing, parachuting, or engage in any other risky activity to suffer an injury while on vacation. Emergencies can arise at almost any time, but when you are on vacation they pose more of a challenge than if you were at home. For instance, if you are traveling alone and are rendered unconscious or incapacitated, your doctors will need to speak to someone about your medical choices. If you don?t have an estate plan which nominates a healthcare proxy or health care power of attorney, this may be very difficult and could result in a court having to make that decision.
What about your financial affairs?
Similar to medical decisions, being injured or in an accident while on vacation can cause significant financial hardships. An estate plan in which you designate someone else who can take over your financial responsibilities if you are incapacitated is essential in these situations. This is especially true if you run your own business or have complicated financial responsibilities that require regular attention.
